Went to Thomsons for brunch on a Sunday. Thomsons wasn't very busy (which I now understand why) but also still a bit understaffed and with service that reminded me a bit of a diner which doesn't really match the price and decor of the place. The food was really ordinary and I kept regretting recommending the place for an extended family outing after previously having a good Sunday buffet brunch experience years ago at the Thomson.

One of us even had the Prime Rib today and it was like it was microwaved stuff from the night before. It was pretty confusing how ordinary the food generally was considering that it took an inordinate amount of time (considering how it wasn't very busy) for it to arrive. It was all just ok but ultimately disappointing as a Sunday Brunch experience.

Hopefully we just hit this spot on an off-night. We were staying in the Hyatt and met up with other people in our group for dinner & drinks. We had a group of 8 and I understand it taking extra time for a group but the wait was excessive and the place was pretty much empty. Food was okay, nothing stood out as exceptional at our table. Service was spotty but the restaurant did comp two desserts so that was nice and appreciated.

Yelper Sue A.'s review and picture of the salmon salad sealed the decision for us on where to dine. We were tired and did not want to walk too far, and in the end we had our dinner here right where we were staying in Hyatt Regency. It almost did not happen as the menu outside was still showing the Brunch menu, and nobody paid any attention to us standing by the entrance. It was fairly quiet at that time, and the staff was just hanging by the bar counter. Only when I walked in towards the bar, then did someone come over. We were seated (could choose where we want to sit since it was quite empty) quickly. Service was much better after that. The bartender was able to tailor the cocktail a bit to my taste (I prefer it sweeter). I had the specialty cocktail Falernum Rum Punch which tasted like Pina Colada as it had coconut in it. The description was just "appleton 12 yr rum, disaronno, pineapple, lime, house made falernum, all spice bitters". It was good though. I was undecided between the beef and salmon. A friend told me I should get the beef as I was in Calgary and it would be Alberta beef. So I had the Grilled Alberta Striploin with "smoked poplar bluff potatoes, grass-fed beef tallow, pickled shallot, urfa biber chili, sour cream" -- All these fancy words. I wish it would just say beef with potato wedges and sour cream and greens. Nevertheless, it was tasty. My friend had the Thomson salad with the add on of the Ora King salmon. Ok, I googled it and found out Ora King salmon is the wagyu beef equivalent. The salmon was cooked perfectly to a medium rare which could be quite rare for most places to get to that temperature. Most places tend to overcook it. It was a great option for those who preferred a lighter meal. This place is great if you want a nice and quiet place for a meal. Perfect for dates too.
