Don’t trust the positive reviews if you are someone who likes to go to a restaurant for atmosphere just as much as a well cooked meal. Don’t go if you take pleasure in the social experience of eating out. This restaurant was completely empty on a Friday night, but the waiter and owner chose to place us on the worst table in the house, right at the back beside the toilets. We could smell them from our seats and so, as there was not a single other customer in the place, we asked if we could possibly sit by the window instead. The aggression that we were greeted with for this simple request was shocking, as the waiter berated us for asking to sit at a larger table that had not been allocated to us. After some discussion, he grudgingly agreed to move us. We assumed that this was the end of it and asked to see the menu. The waiter pointedly ignored us, returning only several minutes later to rudely jab at a blackboard placed above the counter, where a list of fish and meat could be seen with no prices displayed alongside them, nor any description of how they would be served. The waiter refused to elaborate on either price or descriptions of any dishes. He then suddenly returned to the matter of us moving tables to be towards the front of the restaurant, reprimanding us for sitting at a table meant for 6 rather than for 3. He demanded that we move down the table and into the tight and uncomfortable corner of the restaurant to sit, stating that he needed the space as other customers may arrive soon. We assured him that we would happily move if the restaurant became full enough to warrant it. He became angry and began to speak to us as if we were children not adults. He wouldn’t serve us until we moved into the corner, despite the fact that the restaurant continued to be completely empty. At this, we felt that we had no choice to get up and leave. Two of the three members of our group were Portuguese, and so we could not even rationalise his behaviour as xenophobic. We spoke to him in perfect Portuguese throughout, although he was aware that I myself am not Portuguese. We could find no explanation for his aggressive and rude attitude towards us, unfortunately, and can only advise all potential customers to avoid at all costs. We enjoyed a fabulous meal at the crowded Restaurant A Zona, less than 30 seconds down the street, for under €40 with wine, dessert and digestif spirits. Passing the Toscana after our meal, we were amused to see that it remained completely empty. Whatever you do, AVOID.
