A couple weeks ago I was feeling bored with home-cooked meals, but lazy to get gussied up to "really" go out to eat. We thought about another place, but since it was closed, we stopped in at Utage. Boy am I glad we did! Having only been there once years ago, I didn't recall anything but the food (a really good pork chop). This time, we were seated right outside the kitchen, in the middle of the bustling restaurant and it was great! For starters, I got the feeling that Utage is family-run. I could be wrong, but every single person working there that I saw seemed so happy to be working, and so happy to see the customers, who seemed like old friends. It seemed like most of the folks in the restaurant were regulars, and multi-generational groups where maybe grandparents, parents and kids could all get something the like to eat. So nice & welcoming! The menu is a lot like how the Violet's Grill used to be before they closed. There's a regular, multi-page menu--local food, comfort food, Japanese food, plus specials on the white board--and your meal comes with a drink and dessert. Even the drinks and desserts are old school--like green river and chocolate pudding! You can get all kinds...we got chicken katsu curry and shoyu pork. Both were really good! Casual dining is my favorite--someone else does the cooking and I don't have to get all fancy to go out to eat. I think I may become a regular here!
You gotta have the shoyu pork!   It's the best that I've had in the island!   Looks to be a family run place and they have very friendly servers.  They're always ch checking to see if you need more water of juice.  How the food tasted. They'll be on my regular rotation of restaurants!
the WRITING'S on the wall After a long day, some friends and I gathered for dinner Utage Restaurant & Lounge.  We had originally planned on another restaurant, but the friend who "suggested" Utage had a hankering for their bitter melon soup. 1.  Yes, there's parking.  Ample parking available at City Square Shopping Center. 2.  Yes, there are many "rules" (posted on the walls) one must abide by if choosing to dine at Utage.  These include: *a.  All members of your party must be present before being seated. *b.  There is a 90 minute seating time limit (the exact wording on the sign is 1 hour and 30 minutes; perhaps maybe it seems longer if written in this manner).  Don't eat too slow. *c.  They do not separate checks. 3.  Yes, should you abide by the seating rule, then you will be seated and able to look throughp the menu.  This was only my 2nd visit here at Utage, but failed to recall that their menu had more choices than I expected.  These include Okinawan dishes (soba, etc.), complete entrees/meals, and sandwich options.   4.  Yes, I thought the food was satisfactory.  The meal choices include soup or salad, a drink (tea or soda or fruit punch), and dessert.  I chose the chicken karaage with miso soup and green tea ice cream for dessert.  The chicken is accompanied with a ponzu sauce that complements the dish well.  Initially I thought the price point for my meal ($17.50) was a bit much, but after some thought I felt this was reasonable since the price includes a starter, drink, and dessert. 5.  Yes, service was also satisfactory.  We were warmly greeted upon entering, and were shown immediately to a table as the restaurant wasn't too crowded.  The server took our drink orders and allowed my friends and I to peruse the menu.  She checked on our group periodically throughout the meal. BOTTOM LINE: Although it seems like you're visiting the principal's office gazing at all the "rules" on the wall, my recent dinner visit to Utage was far from uncomfortable.  Good company, decent food, and decent service made for a solid visit.  Convenient meal options that include starter, dessert, and drink are also a winner.
