Downtown San Mateo is loaded with restaurants of every type of cuisine. At 4:45 on a Sunday afternoon, we were hot and tired from walking around in the sun and then we started to get hungry. Chinese? Indian? Japanese? Steak? How about this Vespucci place? 4 Stars on over 400 reviews on Yelp. Not bad. Let's take a look at the 20 most recent reviews - 5, 5, 5, 4, 5, 5, 4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 4, 5, 5, 5, 4. Yes, there are a couple of 1's buried a bit further down as well as a few 3's. Can't keep everyone happy all the time and there are some real haters out there. Read the reviews and decide for yourself. We had a delicious meal from starters to desserts. We arrived shortly after opening with a reservation and were seated immediately. We enjoyed superior service and hospitality from Francesco and Manuela, the owners. The two of them ran the front of the house with assistance from their excellent busser whose name I can't remember. Vespucci is now our second favorite Italian restaurant in the Bay Area. Who knows? A couple more meals here and they could end up being number one! We will definitely be back to try more flavors!
My boyfriend and I wanted Italian food and something different. We tired this restaurant for the first time tonight and it was hands down the best Italian food we both have ever had. I am gluten sensitive and the pasta is imported from Italy. The flour and ingredients are all authentic, clean and i have ZERO sensitivity after having a very heavy meal. We both had pasta dishes. He had fettuccine and i had a fusilli pasta dish, both incredibly fresh, flavorful and truly amazing. Despite being mostly full, they sat us immediately without a reservation on a busy Friday night and we never felt unattended. Loved hearing the owners story, history and will definitely 100% be coming back. Date night has a new place!
We were planning to grab a bite to eat and watch a movie with my in-laws in San Mateo. Instead we discovered Vespucci Ristorante Italiano, named after 14th Century Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci and was a "Eureka!" moment for my Italian born mother-in-law and our party of four. We didn't have reservations on a very busy and warm September Saturday evening around 7:00 pm when I peeked into the restaurant to inquiry whether we might be able to be seated by chance. I was greeted by a very happy, kind and gracious Manuela (later learn the co-owner), who asked if we had reservations. After I noted a full house, she stated there's maybe turn over in 15 or 20 minute. We waited for about that amount of time reading the menu posted outside a table of guest left and we were welcomed again by Manuela who personally set our table. The story of the owners Francesco and Manuela is share in the menu which personalize our evening and cuisine even more. As we settled in, our servers brought us bread with a light tomato sauce spread. Of course with half of our party being Italian it was consumed with delight! We order bruschetta Alla Vespucc as an appetizer for the table with four sizable slices of crunching baguette covered with fresh tomatoes and grilled eggplants marinated in Italian extra virgin olive oil, garlic, black pepper. It was PREFECTTO! For our entrees my father-in-law  ordered the extremely fresh "Gnocchi Al Pesto" which is my half Italian wife favorite dish EVER regardless whether at a restaurant or home (and I am not a huge fan) However, I did taste one of the fluffy pillow like morsels and it was incredible!  Manuela shared with us how they created the dish. I order the "Risotto Al Funghi Porcini" and shared with Manuela our experience at a restaurant in Verona, Italy where we experience four kinds of risotto. My dish was very appealing, hot and included tender yet a little crunchy risotto with fresh porcini and champignon mushrooms, asparagus and Italian Parmesan cheese. It was simply SPETTACOLARE! My Italian mother-in-law is a chef who is mostly vegetarian, selected Parmigiana Di Melenzane PARMIGIANA ( Eggplant Parmesan) PARMESAN.  The eggplant dish was fried and layered with our fresh tomato sauce, imported Italian mozzarella cheese and Italian Parmesan cheese and served with sautéed broccoli. The presentation was excellent and I must confess, I have been to hundreds of restaurants with my mother-in-law during the last twenty years and I HAVE NEVER seen her completely finish a dish. It is according to her "under or over cooked", "too salty or Not enough salt", "too cold", etc and she leaves the entrée on her plate where it is abandoned. So to witness her devouring her dish (minus a taste to my wife and I---it was THAT good!) was a "culinary miracle" to see her cleaned plate!! For our dolce we were "required" to sample the Italian classic Tiramisu with cups of cappacino and the Torta Della Nonna  a pastry cream with a hint of lemon on a base of short pastry, topped with pine nuts, almond and powdered sugar and served with a scoop of vanilla gelato. Le abbondanza! We honeymooned in Italy 15 years ago in Roma, Firenze and Venezia and more recently & in the past visited Firenze, Cinque Terra, Verona, Sorrento, Capri and Naples. We love our Italian travel memories and exploring the variations of Italian cuisine, ambiance and friendly family atmosphere. At Vespucci we were very much "at home" with Manuela's gracious Italian hospitality and Francesco's Italian culinary artistry reminded us of our Italian heritage and is indeed a "Little corner of Italy in San Mateo" lives up to its promise!.   Gustare! Bellissimo!
