Zuni Café has been a comforting, fine-dining place for me for almost three decades. They nail the basics, excel at the challenging cooks, and have the service staff to make every visit feel like a special visit with fancy friends (who wear starched shirts with collars).Their bread and butter is always a joy. On our last visit, a rush between events, we stopped at the counter for just bread, butter, and coffee. Linen was tossed on the polished metal counter and we were attended to just as mindfully as if we'd pre-planned a party of ten. Thank you, delightful staff. In previous years I've worked through the entire menu, several times. I have a soft spot for their care of meats and poultry, with a mild discontent at the shoestring potatoes (which Zuni can cheerfully ignore as the rest of the clientele orders them as though they were going out of style).Mention ought to be made of the beautiful architecture. I've probably been seated at every table in the restaurant, from the triangle corner to a second-story balcony table to the one right by the fireplace. All have been fun and have shown me another aspect of the space. Oh, and take a moment to eyeball the beautiful bread oven.Mmmm, hungry again. Must plan return visit.

A San Francisco staple, Zuni Cafe is best known for their Chicken for Two. The chicken takes about an hour to prepare so order it first with your drinks so the wait isn't too long. With the roasted chicken comes a warm bread and frisée salad, which is my favorite part of the dish. If you're coming to Zuni Cafe and not getting the chicken, did you even go to Zuni Cafe? The rest of the menu changes seasonally and other than the chicken, it was worth noting that every table other than mine ordered the Shoestring Potatoes, which looked great but was not in the cards for our meal. Instead of fries, when I mostly recently I went in and got the Risotto with sorrel mushrooms. The risotto was tasty but a little too al dente and also lacking in the sorels for my liking but overall I love this place and their food.
