Wow! Excellent meal! We absolutely loved our experience at Die Metzgerei. We came in on a Friday night without a reservation (big mistake - make a reservation!!) and they just squeezed us in before another reservation. We started with a plate of authentic Austrian sausage, paired with grape sauerkraut and a berry mustard - very delicious start to the meal. For our main courses I ordered Austrian pasta - a layered dish with thin pasta sheets, cheese, and ham baked in a skillet. Absolutely amazing. My date ate a very traditional Austrian dish - tender boiled beef with a potato pancake, served with bone marrow. The meal also came with dark bread and two sauces - a chive sauce (personal favorite) and an apple sauce. Also very tasty. We decided to get dessert as well. We settled on sharing a chestnut mousse with spiced rum apples. Divine! This is a must go to in Vienna if you're here. The food is amazing and the staff is so friendly and helpful. Great for any occasion but like I said it gets very busy for dinner so definitely make a reservation.
The absolute best meal we had in Vienna, and one of the best I've had, period!  We were on the hunt for authentic Viennese for our last night in Vienna and after some quick research, we landed at Die Metzgerei.  This is off the beaten path from the normal tourist trails, but worth the trip.  It is very easy to find via the 52 tram, located right at the Lutzowgasse stop (the attached picture of the outside is taken from the tram stop - it is right there). We were welcomed warmly with great spirit as if we just dropped in on family.  A beautiful Vienna day so we were able to sit out back in the very welcoming courtyard.  Ottokringer drafts to start - the local favored beer - traditional for me, blond for Kat, both on draft, both served perfectly chilled and fresh. We relied on the house for recommendations and they did not lead us astray at any point.  Soups to start, I had the beef with pancake strips - yes pancake strips, not a misprint.  Pumpkin for Kat and Jilly - both were excellent - perfect start.  We also shared the Vienna sausage plate, which was the best sausage we had on our trip.  Just perfect, served over bacon mashed potatoes.   For mains I had the cordon blue, which was schnitzel with ham and cheese.  Kat had the traditional schnitzel and Jillian the Viennese pasta.  Everything was excellent - simple with no overpowering add ons, everything stood on it's own.  We included the German potato salad and truffle fries for sides, which were the perfect compliment. Despite the feast, we continued on to dessert - pumpkin creme brûlée for Kat and Jillian and I split some local pancake apple dish that is rumored to erase all calories from the meal.  Outstanding with a delicious cappuccino - the perfect close to a great meal. An absolutely great authentic dining experience and a meal i will remember forever as a perfect close to our Vienna journey.
Amazing food and friendly (and funny!) staff!!! It is indeed slightly out of touristy area and I recommend taking a tram that stops right in front of the restaurant (I walked from Schonbrunn Palace and it was over 30 minutes of walk in cold weather walking alone in the dark where not too many people were around). I ordered "die metzgerei" - crispy homemade frying sausages with mashed potatoes and it was a perfect portion for me, the sausage was so crispy outside and juicy inside with full of flavors and it went so well with their garlic dip. Mashed potato had different ingredient mixed with little cheese crisp on top, it was so good and very well decorated for such a simple dish! I also followed their recommendation for dessert and had pumpkin cream brulee and very happy with what I received. Despite being a single customer, I was very well catered with two staff members constantly circulating the room; staff were very attentive and helpful with taking their time to explain and recommend their suggestions, also very pleasant and in very good spirit that makes you laugh! I strongly recommend this restaurant and I will return when I visit again the next time!
