Ljubljana is the picturesque, green capital of Slovenia. It is also the country’s economic, cultural, educational, political, and administrative hub. Located on the Ljubljanica river, the city lies in its central depression, surrounded by high peaks of the Julian alps. The capital’s central market and its lovely bridges owe their distinctive appearance to the talented Joze Plecnik. He was a Slovene architect whose artistic imprint on Ljubljana can be compared to the impact of Antoni Gaudi in Barcelona.
Ljubljana is a city of culture and home to numerous theaters, museums, and art galleries. It boasts one of the oldest philharmonic orchestras in the world. The honorary members of the first music society in Slovenia included renowned composers such as Joseph Haydn, Ludwig Van Beethoven, Johannes Brahms, and violinist Nicolo Paganini.

The first impression a visitor gets of Ljubljana is that it is an exceptionally young city with over 50000 students who give it a special vibe. Numerous local restaurants and inns offer a wide range of traditional and international delicacies, not to mention superb wines. The food culture has been influenced by centuries of Austro-Hungarian rule, as well as by neighboring countries of Italy and Croatia. Ljubljana’s dining scene flourishes with new and exotic offerings, ranging from riverside cafes to restaurants in a castle. Here is our recommended choice of the best restaurants to sample in this charming city.

Two of its specialties that cannot be found anywhere else in the city are kuku sabzi – a vegetarian dish made of parsley, coriander, shallot, and other spices and kebab koobideh – spiced grilled minced meat kofta similar to a Turkish kofta, both of which are excellent in taste.
