I had the pleasure of dining at ABC Seafood recently, and I would like to share my experience. I was invited to a birthday celebration for two of my (married) Vietnamese friends, which began at ABC Seafood. I arrived, being one of only two or three white people in a group of over 50 people from the Vietnamese culture. Without getting into my personal life too much, I have never felt comfortable in a new situation, especially one where I stand out as “different.” Everyone I met was very kind and friendly, but I was still self-conscious. I am also not a foodie, I eat because I need food to live. That being said, I have never fully grasped how to properly use chopsticks, and there was nothing on the tables except chopsticks. Yes, I could have asked for a spoon and fork, but once I saw the amount of people from that came to celebrate my friends, I decided to really try to embrace this moment and be as present in the experience as I could. Also, pride… I ordered orange chicken; it’s usually good at most places, and there was plenty of other food ordered for our table. When my food was brought out, and before I could grab my chopsticks, our amazing server brought over a spoon and fork and placed it by my food. The look she gave me was not one of judgement, but empathy. Anxiety - gone. She knew that a white guy ordering their orange chicken does not eat their food or know their culture, so she tried to make me feel more comfortable. That kind act allowed me to relax enough to be able to use chopsticks to eat my meal, though it was much slower. AND…. The food was absolutely amazing. I’m finishing off my orange chicken for dinner now and loving ever minute of it again. I will definitely be coming back!
