This restaurant had many good reviews, but I think that there needs to be some significant improvements. We tried 4 different pastas, but the creamy shrimp pasta was the best. All of the antipastos we tried and other dishes were just mediocre. (But, the focaccia was pretty good-IF you ask for olive oil.) While the bolognese and mushroom pasta was just ok on its own, I highly recommend buying both and mixing them together. The service was very much leaning towards the self-service side, and we had to ask for almost everything. The waitress told us that everything was written in the menu but did not know anything about the menu, and made us feel stupid for no reason. Although, we loved the restaurant’s vibe and atmosphere, and we will always support a family run restaurant, we will not be coming back. Highlight: Secret Menu Item we requested was a fresh salad, and that was delicious. (There were forks and knifes though, which is uncommon here-Americans were happy and approved this.) Price per person: ¥2,000–3,000 Food: 4 Service: 2 Atmosphere: 5

Hidden gem for Italian food. We were pleasantly surprised by the outstanding food and congenial atmosphere of Aliare. We had house specials of Pumpkin Cream Penne and Gorgonzola Pear Risotto and a carafe of wine. Both dishes were very interesting and well prepared. Honestly, it was some of the best gourmet Italian food we’ve had, for a fraction of the price we would have paid in the US. Judging from the reactions of the other diners, I think all of the meals were outstanding, in addition to being unique. The interior isn’t fancy but it felt very comfortable and we enjoyed watching the food preparation. It’s ironic that the first review I’ve felt compelled to write in Japan is of an Italian restaurant. Meal type: Dinner Price per person: ¥2,000–3,000 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
