I have been coming to AGAVE for nearly ten years. It has always been one of my favorite tequila bars in Tokyo, which makes this experience even more disappointing. My friend was visiting for the first time and was excited to take a few photos. At that moment there were no other customers around. Instead of politely explaining the house policy, a staff member abruptly stopped us and said, “You can’t take photos here whatsoever.” He then compared the bar to “someone’s home” and lectured us that taking photos was inappropriate. I fully respect a no-photo policy. That is not the issue. The issue is the way we were treated. There is a huge difference between politely saying, “I’m sorry, we have a no-photo policy,” and speaking to customers in a confrontational and patronizing manner. What made the experience even worse was that after I returned from the restroom, the same staff member continued staring at me in an intimidating way. Only after we stared back did he approach and offer an awkward explanation that he had “misunderstood” the situation. By then, the damage had already been done. As someone who has supported this bar for almost a decade, I have never expected to be treated with such hostility. A great bar is remembered not only for its incredible selection of tequila and mezcal, but also for how it treats its guests. Sadly, because of this staff member’s attitude, I no longer feel welcome at a place I once loved. Price per person: ¥9,000–10,000

Really good atmosphere when I walked in, and it seemed well-reviewed, but I could buy a bottle of almost anything I knew of on the menu for the cost of two of their shots. I know it’s a bar, but goodness gracious that’s absurd. Do they have a different price point based on being foreigners? We asked for a Japanese menu and the server said they don’t have one either. I just left at that point.
