I had read about Agriturismo Alpe Palu on a Rick Steve's forum and knew I wanted to check it out. We walked about 20 minutes from the Alp Grum train station down to the hostel/restaurant. We ate outside viewing the breathtaking Palu mountain, glacier and lake. The lunch was simple, fresh and delicious (assorted fruits and cheeses with bread, homemade gnocchi with butter and sage, and local beers). The owner/cook/hostess/manager etc. was extraordinarily kind and pleasant to chat with. She encouraged us to continue our walk down the grade to the train station at Cavaglia to pick up the train back to Tirano. A beautiful 40 minute walk in a slot canyon, following a glacial waterfall and creek. Thank you Agriturismo Alpe Palu, it was a perfect day trip for us from Varenna!
