One of my favorite places to eat. I try to revisit whenever I am in the area. I had the Saba and Tempura this time. The mackerel was grilled perfectly and seasoned simply with salt. The fish was very fresh so it was mild in flavor. The tempura consisted of three shrimp and assorted vegetables. The coating was light and crispy. It was served with a light soy sauce for dipping but was fine on its own. The meal comes with a bowl of miso soup and a small dish of pickled vegetables. There is a special board as well. If there is Salmon Collar available, definitely order that. The salmon will be rich in flavor and grilled perfectly. Service is polite and efficient. The dining area is pleasant and relaxing. Parking is in the back with some street parking in the front.

I've been dining at Ai for more than half of my life — and in fact for more than 2/3 of my 63 years. Ai offers Japanese comfort food at its finest. The cozy home-like atmosphere is always welcoming, and the wait staff is always familiar. I cannot recommend it enough. Vegetarian options: Agedashi tofu, steamed spinach, mixed vegetable tempura and a few other items are all in the appetizer section, and three of these will be filling enough. There are also vegetarian sushi options. Service: Dine in Meal type: Dinner Price per person: $20–30 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Recommended dishes: Miso Soup, Yellowtail Kama, Chicken Teriyaki Recommendation for vegetarians: Somewhat recommend

Hadn't been to AI Japanese Restaurant and Bar in quite a few years. It was our go to place when we were in South Pasadena. My adult son mentioned that they had a 3 stars on Yelp which surprised us. The service: Our server was fine, she was friendly and attentive. The food: The nabeyaki udon was fair. So many other places are better tasting. We had a salmon cut roll which had no color and very little flavor. The yellowtail cut roll was the same. The rainbow roll was huge but, again, just so-so. Not recommended at $28. The pork katsu was okay, but nothing special. In conclusion: We won't be returning since there are so many better places.
