The recipe for success of this restaurant is its nicely cooked cod, fish & fries and coleslaw. Al & Jan's Fish & Chips with takeaway dishes is good for those clients who like to have supper in a hurry. A number of guests note that the staff is cute at this place. The prompt service is a great benefit of this place. Here you will pay adequate prices. The cool atmosphere is what this spot is about. I’ve been a customer of Al and Jan’s for years and this has been my goto place for authentic fish and chips. Since the new ownership things have changed. I’ve been there a few times hoping things will get better being a new owner, cause it takes time to fine tune a restaurant. The quality of the cod ( if it is cod ) is the poorest I have ever had. The texture of the fish where the backbone used to be was literally chewy like rubber and dark brown in colour . On all 4 pieces ( 2 orders ) In all my years I do not remember a dark strip of meat where the bone used to be. I asked the server if it was cod and why that part of the fish was rubbery. He said yes it’s cod and and some others made mention of it. He said he would take it up with the supplier. No mention of compensation for the unfavourable meal. I heard another customer complain about the fish being chewy as well. For what it’s worth I believe it’s not cod that’s being served. These days food costs are climbing and I understand the dilemma. I would sooner pay more for food quality than be duped with an inferior product. Bare in mind it’s only my opinion that’s it’s not cod as advertised.
