I was really excited to celebrate my birthday dinner at Alchemist. The whole concept immediately appealed to me: the laboratory/apothecary aesthetic, the playful presentation of the drinks and the idea of food and cocktails coming together as an immersive experience. We therefore chose the Opus Magnum: the 5-course surprise menu with drink pairing. Unfortunately, the experience didn't live up to the concept. We were three people and had both the alcoholic and non-alcoholic drink pairings, so we got to taste quite a variety. The drinks were definitely the highlight, creative, beautifully presented and much closer to what I had imagined from Alchemist. Both the alcoholic and non-alcoholic creations were good. For the drinks, I'd give around 4 stars. The food, however, was disappointing. For a 5-course experience at this price point, I expected interesting flavours, surprising combinations and at least a few of those moments where something really happens on your taste buds. Instead, everything tasted familiar. There were no particularly unique flavours or memorable combinations, and much of the food gave the impression of having been prepared in larger batches and simply portioned and served. At times it reminded me more of something taken from the freezer and put into the oven than of a special 5-course dining experience. Nothing was terrible, but nothing felt particularly refined, exciting or memorable either. For the food alone, I'd give around 2 stars. What I missed most, though, was the experience. Alchemist has such a fabulous theme and so much potential to really transport guests into another world. Yet the connection between the food, drinks and alchemy concept was barely explained or brought to life. The service felt tired and disengaged rather than playful or enthusiastic. Fresh plates and bowls were repeatedly forgotten, and there was very little warmth, storytelling or excitement around what was being served. With a concept like this, I want the team to sell it, live it, breathe it. Tell us what we're drinking. Tell us why it accompanies this particular dish. Play with the laboratory theme. Make us curious about what's coming next. Let us feel as though we've stepped into the world of an alchemist for an evening. I've experienced themed restaurants where the staff and storytelling make the whole evening feel immersive, and that's what I was hoping for here, especially for a birthday and when choosing the full 5-course pairing experience. There were positives beyond the drinks. The location at Schifflände is fantastic, just a few steps from Marktplatz, and the restaurant itself has lots of interesting details. Even the unisex bathroom concept is cool and fits the aesthetic. Unfortunately, it wasn't particularly well maintained when we visited, there were empty hand-soap bottles sitting in the sink, for example. Small details, but they matter when the overall concept is supposed to feel special. One other small thing that left us puzzled: when we were asked whether we'd like to take some of the remaining food home, we were told the takeaway container would cost CHF 5. After paying for the full dining experience, charging CHF 5 for a doggie bag just felt unnecessary. Such a brilliant concept, great location and beautiful setting, and the drinks show what is possible. I just wish the food, service, attention to detail and storytelling had brought the same imagination and energy. Food: 2 Service: 3 Atmosphere: 4 Meal type: Dinner Price per person: CHF 100+
