Named for the character in Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, Ali Baba is located next door to the Red Rock Deli on Lomas just west of Tramway. Signage indicates it’s a food mart and indeed, about half of the store’s real estate is devoted to comestibles. The other half houses a very charming, ornately decorated dining room unlike any in Albuquerque. It’s a magnificent milieu for dining on the restaurant specialties, some listed on the storefront signage: gyros, baba ghanoush, falafel, kabab, hummus, tabooli, fattoush and more.

Potential.... I am originally from the Detroit area. One of the things that I miss is good Middle Eastern food. Lebanese is my favorite. I saw a post on Facebook about Ali Baba's. Next day, went in search of it. Ali Baba's is located inside of a gas station/convenience store. Outside of the store, they have a sign that says "Gyros', inside, I saw nothing that would suggest a gyro. They did have chicken cooking on a spit. Service is at a counter. A young man stepped up with the cook. Ordering was confusing as neither this young man or the cook could answer any questions about the menu board that was hung. I ordered a chicken shwarma wrap, partner ordered a beef shish-kabob wrap, with babaganoush for a starter. Asked for a side of tzatziki, which they didn't have. Asked for water. Sat down in dining area/hookah lounge? One water arrived-had to ask for another. Long wait...wraps arrived, packaged like carry-out. Then baba came on a plate. No bread was served with the baba. The chicken shwarma wrap was a little dry; could've benefitted by a little tzatziki. The shish-kabob sandwich was not chunks of meat but more like a shwarma-but very good. The babaganoush was not like any that I have had but was very good. Give it a "like" or a " don't like"??? Good question. I am giving them a " like" because I will try them again. I liked the babaganoush. I liked the beef wrap. Also, picked up some tamarind paste for cheap in the grocery. The place has potential! Not bad for cheap eats.
