Alioli was one of those restaurants where the meal becomes more than simply eating dinner. We were a party of four and ended up spending more than five hours there on a Friday evening—which says quite a bit about how comfortable and relaxed the experience was. I started with my usual Old Fashioned. It was nicely balanced and served with a large rock of ice. I would have loved a cherry, and perhaps a smoked version, but overall it was a very enjoyable start. For appetizers, we took the server’s recommendation and went with a mixed platter—half seafood and half traditional Italian charcuterie. That turned out to be a good choice. The cured meats were excellent, and the shrimp were enjoyable. The calamari, however, was the weaker part for me; the pieces were quite large and somewhat chewy. We also ordered the Italian bread with olive oik separately, it was a simple but worthwhile addition to the table. The daily special was halibut topped with bruschetta and served with butterfly shrimp. It was certainly an unusual combination to look at, but surprisingly, it worked better than I expected. I went with the 14-oz ribeye, with spaghetti substituted for the vegetables. The steak was cooked nicely and the sauce was very good, although I felt the plate was missing one element to bring everything together. The individual components were good, but the dish didn't quite come together as a complete experience for me. Also they did not have blue cheese. What really stood out was the hospitality. Our server was attentive throughout the evening and had a good sense of humour without being intrusive. One of the three Italian partners who own the restaurant also came by the table to introduce himself and check on the guests. That personal touch made a difference and gave the evening a more welcoming feeling. Dessert was a nice way to finish. I had the chocolate bombe. Despite the name, it wasn't really molten chocolate inside; it was closer to a chocolate mousse. Still, I enjoyed it—the contrast between the crunchy exterior, mousse and ice cream made it a satisfying dessert. Around the table we also had the ice cream with coffee, served in a cone with biscotti, as well as the crème brûlée, both of which received very positive reviews from the table. And then came a pleasant surprise: a complimentary limoncella for the table. It was my first time trying it, and I thought it was an excellent, refreshing finish after a long dinner. Alioli is not inexpensive, and I would put it toward the upper end of the price range for Mississauga. But you are paying for more than the food—the elegant Italian setting, relaxed atmosphere, attentive service and the overall dining experience are part of what you get. Parking is fairly convenient, with a few spots directly in front and additional options nearby, generally just a minute or two on foot. Would I go back? Absolutely. The atmosphere at Alioli Ristorante was truly delightful and made for a pleasant visit. While the overall experience was good, I found the food to be a bit underwhelming. The restaurant aims for an upscale dining experience, but the flavors were not quite there yet, particularly with the seasoning. The seafood, though minimal, was a highlight of the meal.
