A MICHELIN star: cuisine of great finesse. Worth the step!
Good standard.

As the name suggests, it’s all about fish and shellfish here on the top floor of the South Place Hotel. Whether it’s Scottish cod with Jersey Royals and sea lettuce, or Cornish monkfish with roasted carrot, the kitchen knows how to cook prime seafood perfectly and make it the star of the dish... My wife and I celebrated our anniversary at Michelin-starred Angler, at the top of South Place Hotel in London, and it turned into one of those dinners we will remember for a long time. Because of our dietary requirements, Craig Johnston, former MasterChef: The Professionals winner, curated a special menu for us, which made the occasion feel particularly thoughtful. For anyone looking for a Michelin-starred seafood restaurant in London for a special occasion, Angler is a genuine hidden gem. The dining room has an elegant, understated feel that suits the food. The lighting is soft, the seating comfortable, and the noise level restrained enough to have a proper conversation. Nothing felt rushed. There was a calm rhythm to the evening, allowing us to appreciate each course without the formality becoming stiff. For a fine dining restaurant in the City of London, Angler manages to feel polished while remaining warm and welcoming. Our tasting menu began with a Tunworth cheese cornetto with candied walnuts: crisp, delicate and savoury, with the richness of the cheese balanced by the sweet nuttiness of the walnuts. Next came a prawn and squid ink cracker with smoked cod's roe and espelette pepper. The cracker was light and crisp, while the roe brought a deep smoky salinity and the pepper added gentle warmth. Homemade ricotta with raisin, caper and smoked almond followed, combining creamy, sweet, salty and smoky flavours remarkably well. Even the seeded sourdough with whipped brown butter deserved attention; warm bread and beautifully aerated, nutty butter made a deceptively simple course memorable. The tuna tartare was fresh and clean, dressed with ginger, toasted sesame and a smooth pepper purée that added depth without overwhelming the tuna. We were also treated to Craig's Native Lobster Raviolo with fennel, Thai basil and spiced lobster bisque, specially adapted into a non-alcoholic version for us. This was a standout. The pasta was delicate, the lobster sweet and tender, and the bisque had the concentrated shellfish richness you hope for from one of the finest seafood restaurants in London. Fennel and Thai basil brought freshness and fragrance that kept the dish balanced. The Scottish cod continued that standard. It arrived with Jersey Royals, cauliflower purée and sea lettuce butter. The cod was beautifully cooked, with moist, pearly flakes and a clean flavour, while the creamy cauliflower and buttery potatoes gave the dish substance. The sea lettuce butter added just enough marine salinity to tie everything together. Dessert was a 35% Azélia chocolate mousse with hazelnut mousseline, toasted almond and vanilla mascarpone. It was smooth and indulgent without becoming heavy, with plenty of roasted hazelnut character and texture from the almonds. Earl Grey tea fudge, macadamia financier with maple and vanilla cream, and a bright confit lime and kalamansi bonbon provided a lovely final sequence of petit fours. Service throughout our anniversary tasting menu at Angler London was exceptional. John Le Bihan and Javine Dennis looked after us wonderfully, but a massive thank you must go to Mladen Mladenov, who really made our evening special. Also, the wonderful chefs who made our meal so memorable. The pacing was excellent, explanations were clear, and our dietary requirements were handled with confidence rather than fuss. Craig's willingness to adapt the lobster raviolo without alcohol was another example of how carefully the kitchen approached our meal. Angler is particularly well suited to couples celebrating an anniversary, birthday or other meaningful occasion, as well as anyone who appreciates precise seafood cooking. An evening visit allows enough time to enjoy the tasting-menu format properly without feeling hurried. We left feeling that the Michelin star was thoroughly justified. The cooking was technically accomplished but never lost sight of flavour, and the personal touches made our anniversary genuinely memorable. Angler is a true hidden gem in London, and we would return without hesitation. Meal type: Dinner Price per person: £100+ Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

I had a wonderful dining experience at this restaurant. Every course was presented with such care and artistic flair. The attention to detail was clear from the moment the first bites arrived. I particularly enjoyed the delicate amuse-bouche served in a small vessel filled with grains. It was a beautiful start to a very memorable meal. Everything tasted as good as it looked. I will definitely be back. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
