Jordan and I had our wedding reception at August last weekend, and we truly couldn’t have chosen a more perfect venue. From start to finish, the entire experience was exceptional. The planning process was seamless thanks to Matilda and Belinda, who were both incredibly organised, responsive, and supportive throughout. The venue itself is stunning and completely unique, set within a beautifully restored old church that created such a special atmosphere for our day. The food was absolutely incredible — we opted for four courses, and every dish was outstanding. Our guests are still talking about it, with many saying it was the best food they’ve ever had at a wedding (and even in Brisbane!). The lamb and especially the almond fish were clear favourites. The team went above and beyond on the day, making everything so easy for us. They assisted with setting up our flowers and favours, coordinated seating tags seamlessly, and took great care in refrigerating our cake in the morning before presenting it so beautifully later on. The staff worked effortlessly in the background to ensure everything ran smoothly. Their attention to detail and attentiveness meant we could fully relax and enjoy every moment of the afternoon. We can’t recommend August highly enough — if you’re considering it for your reception, you will have an incredible day. Thank you so much, Matilda and the entire team! We’ve been to August twice before and each time leave wondering why we relegate it to “special occasions”, as though there’s a maître d’ at the door checking birth certificates and anniversaries. The better strategy, perhaps, is to drop in often and slowly work through the menu rather than ordering like doomed aristocrats before the revolution. The pumpkin fritti with skordalia is gloriously generous and the beef tartare becomes moorish under a snowfall of fresh horseradish. The tuna almondine dissolves on the tongue before giving way to crunch and texture, while a perfect pyramid of expertly dressed leaves somehow managed to both lighten and flatter the duck ragu pasta which was unexpectedly delicate yet still deeply autumnal and comforting. The off-menu wine recommendation was superb and the quince and rhubarb vermouths dangerously easy to continue drinking long past good judgement. Dessert was a combo of rhubarb, pistachio and meringue and avoided the usual cloying sweetness of sugar held together with egg whites. The finely chopped tart rhubarb cut cleanly through the crisp sweetness with the sort of balance that makes you briefly consider ordering another. And then there’s the service: old-school European in the best possible sense. Haven’t seen it this good in a while balancing efficiency, warmth and professionalism. God bless a waiter who pours wine with one arm folded neatly behind the back. It’s all in the details, and August has them in buckets. It also reminded me to stop dutifully queueing for the algorithm-approved dining rooms backed by hospitality empires and remember the pleasure of chef-owner restaurants where there is still genuine risk, personality, heart and a slightly obsessive person in the kitchen cooking as though it matters deeply to them because it does. August feels and tastes like that sort of place. A true local gem that deserves far more than date nights and milestone dinners. Price per person: $120–140 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

Went there for my birthday dinner last night and it was just outstanding. The service was superb, the food was delicious and the atmosphere and building was stunning. I know it’s a changing menu, as so many good places are, but highlights for us were the golden beets, the steak tartare, and the coq au vin! Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
