If you’re like most people, you’ve only heard of the Kurdish people/culture in the context of struggle or war. Time to fix that with a visit to Avaspi, a hidden gem of a spot in plain sight! While labeling itself as a Mediterranean restaurant (highlighting Kurdish and Anatolian food), it really is unique in its preparations of familiar items (from babaganoush to whiskey in the sparkling sangria) and unfamiliar offerings. The varied meze are great for sharing— fried halloumi, calamari, shrimp and the Mediterranean meze are stand outs. There are combos for sharing amongst larger parties. Everything looks, smells and tastes fresh, with well blended, assertive flavors. The Happy Hour features discounted food and drink which is a great way to start your meal before diving into more substantial offerings (or if you just want a drink and a snack, a nice variety of wines and cocktails and mocktails are available while you nosh). Service is friendly and attentive and they are eager and willing to go into detail about the dishes and more. Many items come with bread but it’s never the same type of bread! Everything is fresh and the room is comfortable, a bit dark, with an electro soundtrack that gives a kind of club feel. There’s a large, quiet, side street patio which you should take advantage of when possible. I recommend you use Google Earth to see Mardin, the city featured in a mural on the main wall. After eating this food and seeing the land, you’ll want to visit! There’s an effort to convert the somewhat locker room like bathroom with dramatic paint colors and flowers but it still seems a work in progress. No ameneties or hygiene products, good tp, moderately lit.Clean/tidy.
