Wheat and gluten trigger an allergic and autoimmune response for me. My good friend had a birthday dinner and knowing my dietary restrictions, chose Avli. They have so many gluten free dishes, and the reviews said the staff was knowledgable and accommodating to allergies. That was very kind of her to make sure I could eat and had options. We explained my need to be gluten free at the top and ordered three or four appetizers. There was one appetizer that contained gluten and another that we ordered exclusively with their gluten free pita. The waitress brought out the dishes with the pita, and said everything was gluten free except one, pointing to the one gluten appetizer. It looked delicious, so we dug in. Two or three minutes later, a man rounded the corner with a dish and said “Here’s the gluten free pita.” It looked different from the other pita already on the table. The table fell silent as we all connected that the pita I just ate was in fact NOT the gluten free pita that we had ordered and that the waitress had said was gluten free. We tried to flag down the waitress, it seemed she was avoiding our table. Finally she came over and confirmed that the pita contained gluten and swiftly walked away. I excused myself to the bathroom where I induced vomiting, hoping I could get some of it out, whilst I realized I was about to be in for a bad couple days. I returned to the table, gave my friends some cash and promptly left my friend’s birthday dinner so that I could experience the horrors of an allergic and autoimmune response from the comfort of my own home. I have not had that much gluten in over eight years. Thankfully I found an old rescue inhaler that prevented an ER trip as I was experiencing shortness of breath due to the allergic reaction. I’m typing this with one hand as the other one is swollen and throbbing with joint pain. The brain fog sucks and I get to look forward to weeks of not being able to fully absorb nutrients due to the damage to my intestines. I will spare the other details. I would rather not eat for five days than eat again at this establishment. Oh goody, looks like I may get to dabble in that type of food restriction as my system continues to respond from being glutened. 0/5 stars. Food: 1 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 4 Meal type: Dinner Price per person: $50–60 Dietary restrictions: Was severely glutened after extensively explaining that I was gluten free. Would not recommend if you have allergies.

If you’re looking for exceptional Greek cuisine in Chicago, Avli River North is always at the top of my list. Every visit is consistently outstanding. Their happy hour is a wonderful way to explore the menu, especially the incredible house spreads, the flavorful phyllo-wrapped shrimp, and the Burrata Peach & Tomato Salad, which is simply unforgettable. The hospitality is just as memorable as the food. The team is genuinely warm, welcoming, and attentive, making you feel as though you’ve been transported to a charming corner of Greece. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion, meeting friends, or simply craving an extraordinary meal, I recommend Avli River North without hesitation. It’s one of Chicago’s finest dining experiences.
