From the moment you walk in, Aya gives you the sense of being a high end restaurant without it being pretentious. The service was impeccable. Nothing but good things to say. The food was amazingly comforting. Nothing over the top, but everything done just right as if your Teta is in the back, giving them direction. You walk away knowing that you'll be back. I really wanted to love Aya. The space is beautiful, the atmosphere is great, and the service was attentive throughout the meal. Unfortunately, the food didn't live up to the expectations. The tuna tartare and pistachio tiramisu were easily the best parts of the night. The beef carpaccio felt like it was missing something, the venison and chicken skewers leaned more Indian than Middle Eastern in flavor, and the eggplant was served cold, which took away from the dish. Even the fries came out so hot that they felt a bit oily at first. I hope they continue refining the menu, but based on my visit and the price we paid, the food simply didn't match the quality of the space or the hype. Went for a birthday dinner a few nights ago. Our waiter was wonderful and very helpful describing some menu items. I enjoyed the Layla mocktail, sweet but not too much. My husband and I shared a few of the smaller plates: the lamb shish kabob, dukka prawns, beet salad, halloumi, quwarmah pide, & braised short rib. Mostly everything was delicious, except the halloumi was cold instead of warm, and one (of only 2) prawns was disintegrating & did not taste right. We shared the “sticky toffee pudding” dessert, but I would not actually call it an authentic one, and my complimentary birthday cake dessert. We both found the inside of the restaurant to be beautiful, but the music was extremely loud. A big downside for me and the reason we likely won’t be back is the outrageous pricing. One single short rib was $46, four bites of halloumi cheese was $20, etc. For the size of the portions vs the price of each dish, this is by far one of the most expensive restaurants I’ve ever been to in Milwaukee. Overall it’s a nice restaurant to go for celebrating an occasion or holiday, but be prepared to spend well over $100 per person since you’ll need to order multiple dishes for a filling meal.
