i’ve been here a few times and always had a great experience and last night was no different. my boyfriend and i came here for dinner before going to see a movie. we had the fernandito, tres carminos, and unico from the cocktail menu, as well as a last word, all of which were incredible (i expect nothing less from our bartender jacob, as he’s an old friend who has been incredibly talented behind the bar for years). we had the charred carrots and charred ceasar for appetizers, followed by the lomo steak and the ribs for entrees. everything was absolutely incredible, but the best part of the night was the dessert course. jacob suprised us with the almendrado (ice cream with almond praline and chocolate sauce) and we ordered the pavlova as well. both were absolutely incredible and we left feeling fat and happy. The best part of this restaurant is the atmosphere. The food was great and the was service good. The portion sizes were perfect! I tried the charred cedar salad, carne y hueso (steak tartare), Peruvian potatoes, and the bife and all were terrific. I especially liked the taste the chimibutter added to the steak. I went to BARDA tonight and walked away underwhelmed. While the food portions were generous, the overall execution and flavor profile simply do not match the premium price tag and massive hype. The Food & Flavor: Although you get a good amount of food, every single dish that hit our table was completely obliterated by an extreme, overpowering smoky flavor. Wood-fire cooking requires restraint, but here, the actual nuance of the ingredients is entirely buried under a heavy, suffocating char. The Design & Layout: The layout feels disjointed. You expect a seat near the action around the wood-fired ovens, but the cooking area is oddly tucked away to the side of the bar. Furthermore, the material choices look cheap for a fine-dining establishment; the bar features a bright blue tile that looks exactly like standard bathroom tile rather than an elegant, sophisticated finish. And our silverware was placed directly on the tile. Service & Hygiene Lapses: The open kitchen exposes some glaring amateurism. The person sending out the food plates was actively scrolling on his cell phone, and then immediately went to touch the finishing salt with his bare hands right after handling his screen. You expect precision, proper kitchen discipline, and balanced cooking at this price point. Despite the good portion sizes, BARDA feels like a case of style over substance. I won't be back. Food: 2 Service: 2 Atmosphere: 2
