we stumbled across this dining experience when looking for a place to eat after exploring the Carpentry Museum in Kobe. It is an absolute gem. The overall experience was phenomenal and we couldn’t recommend it more. The chef was so kind and patient though we did not speak any Japanese, taking the time to converse with us regardless, explaining every dish and wine pairing. Through broken bits of English, French and Japanese, we were able to connect and enjoy our love for food and great wine. The setting is personal and intimate, perfectly curated from the decor to the music to the tableware. It is truly something we know we would not find back home (Canada). It will without question remain one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. Meal type: Dinner Price per person: ¥10,000+ Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

BONGU is a hidden gem of an experience in Kobe. I was fortunate enough to find it by just browsing Google Maps and happened to find it. The owner said that we were the first foreigners to come to his restaurant since it has been open for the last two years and we feel incredibly lucky. The owner is very friendly and informative. The service is top notch, it truly feels like a friend is cooking for you at his home. The food was absolutely incredible at every dish, and the wine selection was just as good. Interestingly, if you don’t drink alcohol he has a few special drinks ready for that as well which were delicious. There were only three people at our service but I think a max of 4-5 would be the most you’d ever have. It’s a very intimate and unique experience watching the owner create the delicious meals you get to enjoy. We can’t say enough good things about our time at BONGU and wish the owner all the success in the world. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

I visited for the first time in a year and a half. We started with the classic beef tartare and enjoyed a series of carefully crafted dishes featuring buri, conger eel, sea bream, Awaji beef, and more. For the wine, we were offered a pairing of natural wines. Even if you choose soft drinks, they provide a high-quality pairing as well. Their original butter was also delicious, and it seems they’re planning to start selling it in the future. The owner was incredibly friendly, and we enjoyed our meal while having fun conversations throughout. We were extremely satisfied, and the friend I brought along was also very happy. I’d love to come back again around spring. I'll also post the dishes I had when I visited previously. Price per person: ¥10,000+ Food: 5 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 4
