Going into Blocksidge & Ferguson Arcade, off bustling Adelaide Street, comes the infant version of Spring Hill darling Jak+Hill, simply named "Baby Jak". Yes, I made a pun from its name - deal with it, sucker! Anyways, this is fairly deep into the arcade, feeling almost a world away from all of the traffic. Walk right into it, just keep on walking and you will eventually find it right in the back area before the stairs. Now this is an oasis in the city, if there was not one already. But for how it goes as a whole, as an independent entity it is another little winner.

It is a couple of counters alligned in an L-shape. There might have been a couple of tables there, but for the most part it is mainly for takeaway orders. However, having a look at the aesthetics of Jak+Hill, this design is definitely deliberate and will go much in the vein as such.

With the shopping space, whatever it was given was simply too small for it that is spilled out into being open-plan. It is a lot smaller than its Spring Hill mothership, but nevertheless I could feel it had the same size of heart in its service, and the atmosphere. That naturally comes with the friendly service. Often I try to make conversations with baristas if the business is not too busy, and some places are easy, others are not so much. Baby Jak is the former. Striking up a conversation with the barista, I learned how they had plans for this place - new coffee machines, and ideas for how to attract clientele. At the moment, it is just a few baristas on board. When things pick up, more busy, hard-working folk shall adorn here.

At the moment, they are going fairly simple with what fare they are serving. There are all kinds of beverages available, including coffee from Allpress, plus for foods they have the specialty flat breads (think of a pita, all kinds of wholesome fillings), all sorts of salads and an array of fantastic look and sounding sweets. Again, simple, but it is all of great quality.

Dropping into work again, it was just another round of the usual order - that is a doppio (bonus points: they understood what I meant) and some good sweet to go with it. This time around, a brownie. With Allpress, I have so far been impressed with it as a blend. Allpress seems to be a forgiving and reliable bean. Again, it turned out well - the right drinking temperature, a good amount of crema, the flavour was not bitter but more of a sweet, kind of honey-like taste and it was simply a good, somewhat strong drink.

Then coming to the brownie, it is hard to describe just how good it was. First, a strong bias towards the taste of dark chocolate is admitted here, and the flavour could not be any closer to perfection unless it attempt to master it. The texture of this brownie was almost like a mound of mousse. It was easy to cut in terms of momentum, but it sure made a mess. Flavour-wise, it was dark, smooth and delightful. Bits of white chocolate were strewn throughout it, making it part bits soft, and part bits crunchy. Definitely try it when you come to Baby Jak; final selling point - Lindt. You're welcome.

So, this is off to a good start. Plans are ahead for what they could do next with the place including introducing new kinds of coffee, and just seeing how business goes from here on. If this success occurs, it will be well deserved. That is because they have made a good product, found a little niche and a hole-in-the-wall to service the absence of relaxing in the city (in spite of hundreds of option). Again, what will be will be - but here's hoping the best for them.

You guys. I had my first flatbread from Baby Jak today, and i fear this is the beginning of the end for my self control. This little hole in the wall cafe is the sister of Spring Hill's Jak and Hill, which I'm yet to visit but will have to make a trip to. Today I ordered a flat combo of sorts- flat white and the roast vegetable flat bread, which contains pumpkin, feta, mushrooms and rocket. Toasted to perfection, loved every bite and sip, can't wait to go back.
