Ambience, Menu, Service is spectacular. It feels great when your inside. I walked in without a reservation and host said the wait is around 1.5hours. Walked out and tried open table to find Balthazar reservation open. Made it and was immediately seated. This all happened within 10min so the reservation communication between Balthazar and Open table needs to be sorted. Other than that, service was great, that blackberry cocktail is a must, the pomme frites is fire!!! Had the host been a bit more receptive, this would have been a full 5 Star review! Its Balthazar, the expectation is sky high!!
A favorite. Very very consistent although on a holiday, a few misses causes a loss of one star.  We ordered the goat cheese and caramelized onion tart, which the waiter forgot to put in so we got it right before the meal.  Light and fluffy, served with Kalamata onion tapenade. Their oysters on the half shell are some of the best in the city.  We ordered 6 from East coast which were fantastic.  You can't go to a French restaurant and not order escargot, especially from Balthazar.  Perfection.  The snail butter, garlic, lemon and parsley makes an amazing liquid for dipping bread.  The steak tartare, which normally comes with chopped capers and a caper-laden sauce, was specially prepared for us sans capers and no sauce.  Just some crostinis.  Delicious.  Prime rib special came out a perfect medium rare, but was cold.  Had to send it back and upon its return, just not quite as perfect as it should have been.  Needed a hint of salt.  The Coq au vin was one of the best I've had.  Crispy skin, tender juicy and with fantastic mushrooms.  My salmon was heaven. A slight crust from the pan sear, perfect medium, and a delicate sauce.  The desserts were a bit of a disappointment.  The chocolate cake was dry and tasted like it had been re-warmed up too many times.  The merengue was dry as well and uneventful.  Too bad after such a fantastic meal.  This is typically a 5 star experience but the cold somewhat bland prime rib and the lackluster desserts along with a way too talkative and forgetful waiter took it down a notch.  But this is a 5 star restaurant any other night of the week.
Great food + great ambiance+ great service !  It's hard to beat this place. I've dined there several times over the past ten or so years and it always delivers. Make sure to make a reservation well in advance, they take them up to 30 days out and you will need it on a prime night or time.
