Bar Birria is a new Mexican concept at Bar Barak with a nice Mexican inspired atmosphere and friendly staff. The food was overall good and well presented, but we came in with high expectations, so the flavors were a bit less exciting than we hoped. The tacos, in particular, could use a bit more salsa, sauce, or spice to bring that bold, authentic Mexican street taco flavor. Still, it’s a promising new spot and worth visiting! Went for a coffee on a Sunday afternoon and sadly it was one of the worst I’ve had. Service was friendly but extremely slow, they got my order wrong, and when my coffee did arrive, it was cold and badly made. Couldn’t find anyone to ask about it, so eventually gave up, paid, and left. Only when I’d already paid did I have the chance to share my feedback, which the staff were very polite about, but ultimately it was too late. A unique place. My third time eating here - coming back for the total package. That means the historical, under-the-radar venue, but also the hospitable staff and warm, low-key ambiance and (especially) the food. As a wine enthusiast, I am glad the wine list offers some really nice wines, but the food here is the main attraction. Surprising combinations of ingredients and bold flavors, lively colors on the plate and everything well-balanced. Eloquent comfort food. Just two examples out of a ray of dishes we had: A plate of (abundant) tuna that and 'encrusted' with cajun spice. Perfect 'cuisson', that underlined the quality of the fresh tuna. Red beet 'ketchup' with a vibrant, herbal sauce to match, that shows the chef's aptitude for sauce-making. It also showed in the velvety morille-sauce, that was more delicate than it was punchy, to perfectly match Iberico pork cheek and rib). The meat itself was prepared in different ways; all of it tasty, tender and beautifully smokey. A special dish on offer 'outside of the regular menu' and a complete joy.
