We were stuck at the airport from 10 AM waiting on a 1 AM flight to LA from Costa Rica with nowhere to go and nothing to do. The bartender Alex took great care of us while we waited. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

Bar Imperial at SJO earns 4 stars from me—not because it’s great value, but because it’s clear about what it is: a polished, high-traffic airport restaurant with friendly staff, decent food, and unapologetically steep prices. We had a late-morning meal at the new location inside Juan Santamaría International Airport. My wife and I each ordered the Costa Rican breakfast (desayuno típico) and two coffees. The food was well-prepared, and the coffee was genuinely good. Service was pleasant—attentive without being intrusive. That said, brace yourself at the register. The total came to about $52, and not because we were ordering champagne and caviar. The real kicker? They charge $1.50 extra for milk in your coffee. Yes, you read that right—milk. On top of a $4.50 base price for the cup. That little upcharge felt more like a petty maneuver than a pricing strategy. To be fair, the menu displays prices clearly, so there are no surprises unless you skim. I didn’t dock a star for the overall pricing—it’s an airport restaurant, and sticker shock is part of the landscape. But the milk surcharge? That cost them a star. In short: solid food, friendly service, great if you’re in a rush and want a local-style meal in a polished setting.
