A hidden gem with top-notch cocktails and an exceptional host Bar Sand is a small, atmospheric cocktail bar tucked away in the lively nightlife district of Pontocho in Kyoto. We discovered it thanks to a chance encounter with a couple we met on the street — and we couldn’t be more grateful for their recommendation! The bar itself is intimate and stylish, and as soon as we sat down at the counter, we were warmly welcomed by the owner. She was absolutely wonderful: kind, genuinely interested, and above all, a true professional. We were immediately handed a warm towel — a small gesture that perfectly set the tone for the evening. There’s no cocktail menu, but that’s part of the magic. The owner knows every classic cocktail by heart and mixes everything completely by feel — no measuring, no fuss. And the result? Perfectly balanced, absolutely delicious drinks. I’ve been to many cocktail bars in my life, but these were truly next level. Some reviews mention the cocktails being pricey, but in my opinion they’re no more expensive than in any quality bar — and absolutely worth it for the experience and craftsmanship. Bar Sand isn’t the kind of place you stumble upon easily, but once you’ve been, you’ll never forget it. Highly, highly recommended for anyone who appreciates real cocktails and genuine hospitality.
