I hate to write this review, but I really wanted to love this place and it fell very short of my expectations. Came here to celebrate a birthday with a reservation, and was seated promptly outside, as requested. The overall setup was nice with sufficient heat lamps for a breezy evening. We ordered two glasses of wine, a red and an orange. I was later told that the orange was out of stock (weird given that they say their menus are updated frequently), so I picked a different one. We were given each one slice of bread, which seems a bit sparse for a $$$ restaurant. For appetizers, we ordered the hibachi tiradito and a pastor dish(?) on a flatbread. The tiradito was the highlight of the meal, while the flatbread... well, fell flat. It was an uninspiring piece of meat on flatbread, with little drops of applesauce around the dish. For mains, we got the "famous" tri-tip, which has not been changed for the 9 years they've been open. Apparently, it had 12 hours of sous vide before being smoked. There was 0 char, very little smokeyness, and the sous vide honestly didn't seem any more enjoyable than a 2 hr sous vide. The mushroom lasagna was OK -- weird to see the layers of the lasagna baked. For dessert, we ordered the honeycomb panna cotta, which was also OK. Nothing quite mind blowing, and the ice part of the dish was half melted by the time it got to us (see in pictures). After watching several other parties receive a candled dessert for their birthdays, it was a little disappointing not receiving the same treatment -- not sure what's up with that. Walked away from this birthday dinner quite disappointed for what was a $200 meal.

I've had the privilege of knowing Julian since we were undergraduates at the Claremont Colleges. After nearly a decade of operation, I finally got to eat at the beautiful restaurant he and Jesse have in Santa Barabara. This was without a doubt the best meal of my entire life: the server, Sarah, was so warm and knowledgeable, and the incredible flavors were truly amazing. I am so proud of my friend, Julian. I've uploaded pictures of their May 2024 menu (at least what I was lucky enough to try in the company of both Jesse and Julian). Thank you to the incredible kitchen and dining staff. A once in a lifetime experience. Service: Dine in Meal type: Dinner Price per person: $50–100 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Recommended dishes: Santa Maria BBQ, Ricotta Dumplings

Barbareño is an absolute must. If you are in Santa Barbara, don’t hesitate, just go. I was a first-time visitor to Santa Barbara last week with a shortlist of 6 restaurants to try. My list covered the range: Michelin one-star on the water to acclaimed but unpretentious tacos spot. Based on everything I had read, I thought Barbareño would end up somewhere in the middle. I was absolutely wrong. Barbareno was the best of all. Best food, best service, best atmosphere, best value. It’s not easy to get it all just right, but this place does.
