Lovely location with a nice selection of chichetti. My reviews go beyond the usual criteria. I also pass my very catty judgement on cat and pet friendliness. If you see me here, this place is paw-approved. Everything else is secondary — though I do have excellent taste and only bother with places that meet a minimum standard. If you see my review here, it usually means this place is included in my Italian travel guides — both the current website version and the paperback, Gigia's Italy: A Cat's-Eye View (Zampe in viaggio: Gigia alla scoperta dell'Italia cat-friendly). If it's not in the book yet, it will be added in a future edition.

Bacaro Basego was a great find in Castello rione in Venice. It's close enough to the main tourist area to be convenient, but far enough away to feel much calmer and more authentic. We stopped for a selection of cicchetti on fresh bread, the menu is intentionally limited, it's a traditional veniatian bacaro that focus on cicchetti rather than full restaurant meals, and everything was delicious. It's the perfect place to slow down, enjoy a glass of wine or a spritz, an aperitivo or just a pause while sampling traditional Venetian snacks. What really made the experience special was the owner. She was very welcoming, genuinely friendly, and happy to chat about Venice, the food, and local traditions. Those personal interactions are what make traveling memorable. One piece of advice for Turists... never ask capuccino with seafood! (see the picture). That gave us a good laugh. If you're looking for a relaxed bacaro with great cicchetti, a warm atmosphere, and wonderful hospitality, Bacaro Basego is definitely worth a visit.
