Beachside Seafood Restaurant & Market in Jacksonville Beach is a seafood establishment that offers a diverse menu with fresh catches. The ambiance is casual and laid-back, perfect for a quick bite or a relaxed dinner. The interior design is simple and unpretentious, with plastic cutlery and baskets for food. Prices can be high, but there are special deals on Wednesdays and Thursdays, including $2 beers and half-price appetizers. The restaurant's location is convenient, within walking distance of many hotels.

One of the standout dishes is the shrimp po' boy, which is huge and loaded with lots of shrimp. The remoulade sauce pairs perfectly with the crab cakes, which are also delicious. The raw oysters and mahi-mahi tacos are other popular options. The restaurant also offers homemade sauces, such as tartar and remoulade, which can be purchased in-store.

In terms of drinks, Beachside Seafood Restaurant & Market has a nice selection of beers and wines. The Duke's Brown Ale from Bold City Brewery is a local favorite, while the house wine is a good option for those on a budget. The restaurant also has a bar and outdoor seating, making it a great spot to grab a drink and enjoy the Florida weather.

Overall, Beachside Seafood Restaurant & Market is a fine dining spot that offers fresh seafood and a relaxed atmosphere. While prices can be steep, the quality of the food and the friendly service make it worth a visit.

The following review was published under my byline in the Florida Times-Union on Saturday, June 11, 2016. This is an original, unabridged version of that review. For a seafood place at the beach, Beachside Seafood Restaurant & Market isn't going to grab you with arresting coastal views, a refined dining room or a curated collection of handcrafted cocktails. Fact is, Beachside is a gritty, unvarnished spot that's stood the test of time, even when so many other seafood purveyors on this side of the Intracoastal have not. Established in 1989, Beachside specializes in fresh, locally caught fish, which it serves up for lunch and dinner seven days a week from its two-story location on Third Street, just south of Beach Boulevard in Jacksonville Beach. Much of its local catches move daily through its downstairs market, where you'll also find a smattering of tables inside and out. At the top of the stairs you'll find a larger, screened-in deck and horseshoe bar, where the catches move on a menu chock-full of starters, soups, salads, sandwiches, wraps and po'boys, and old-school platters. Beachside sources much of its inventory from local providers such as Mayport C&C Fisheries and Safe Harbor, but it doesn't stop at seafood. The French Pantry provides bread products, and most fruits and veggies come from local farmers' markets. My regular review confidant and I headed to Beachside one recent Thursday night to check things out. Two starters got our motors running. The Crab Dip ($8.99) was a mild-mannered blend of real crabmeat and spices, served with crackers and tortilla chips, that could have stood for a big bang of tang in the flavor department. Also for a dish claimed to be served warm, it came across pretty room-temperature at our table. Thankfully, the plate of Fried Pickle Chips ($4.99) that arrived next spelled redemption to our taste buds. These lightly breaded, thick-cut beauties came from homegrown cucumbers and the expertise of Tim Baker, a brine master and Beachside manager who knows his way around a pickle barrel. These addictive, dill-flavored slices vanished fast with the aid of a homemade Cajun ranch dipper, a finger-licking, creamy-tangy treat that could easily stand alone. For her entrée, my friend chose the Ahi Tuna Sandwich ($11.99), with a healthy portion of medium-seared yellowfin slices between an airy toasted Kaiser roll, served with excellent crinkle-cut french fries and hushpuppies. She ditched the roll in favor of the protein, grilled golden brown around the edges for a smooth yet crispy texture. My entrée, the Crabcake Platter ($19.99), boasted two fist-sized, handmade crab patties with golden exteriors that gave way to moist, melty crabmeat within. The flavor was spot-on and made even better with a shot of homemade remoulade sauce offered by our server. For my standard side of a baked potato, I substituted black beans and rice, which were flavorless. And for a seafood place, I was flatly disappointed with the hushpuppies, which were too hard and dry. While you won't find desserts printed on the menu, Beachside offers two renditions of Key lime pie. There's your homemade traditional style ($5.99) ... and then there's the one dipped in chocolate, frozen and served on a stick ($6.99). Naturally, we had to investigate both. The latter turned out to be our clear-cut winner, with the humid afternoon giving us a great assist in attacking the melting triangle of goodness that should not be missed. For those who prefer liquid refreshment, Beachside's happy hour runs Monday through Thursday, 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. and includes two-for-one deals on Bud Light, Red Stripe and Leinenkugel's, $3 Bold City Duke's and four half-price appetizers. The upstairs bar boasts 12 brews on tap and seven varietals of wine. While not without its flavor lapses, Beachside Seafood Restaurant excels in its core mission: serving up fresh, local seafood in fair portions at fair prices.
