Wittgenstein said there are no private languages. But he also said that some things we should pass over in silence: private experiences. How can I explain Biggin? How can I begin to talk about how it makes me feel? The coffee is excellent, but it's also excellent at many other shops -- so that's not the explanation. The owner is friendly and full of omotenashi but ok so is every other kissaten owner. Look, this place is furnished in shades of brown, is full of old portable radios that seem to be receiving broadcasts from 1972, sometimes Hawaiian music, and there's a porcelain figurine of a man pouring coffee, there's a fax machine that's very much still in use-- I'm just tripping over my words here. Like Flaubert complained that he could only drum out rhythms for bears to dance to, all the while wishing to move the stars to pity. Biggin is a meditation on the limitations of language. None of the reviews of it even begin to capture what it's about. None. Don't come here, because maybe you won't get it either.
