The restaurant was not terribly busy; however it took a very long time for our server to come back to take our order after bringing our drinks. It took much longer to receive our food than it ever has. I ordered one of the featured items, the gyro, and my husband ordered the Reuben. When our food arrived, the pita holding my sandwich had been burned and parts of it were actually black. I hesitated to bring it up, but decided it would have such a strong effect on the taste of my sandwich that I asked for a replacement pita, which was brought to me. After just a few bites, I realized that the meat inside was crunchy and dried out. When I pulled a piece out, it broke into crumbs in my fingers. I took several more bites, hoping that each bite would be better, but it wasn't. The flavor of the sauce and the other toppings were wonderful, but the meat was so dry I couldn't even eat half of it.
My husband said his Reuben was good, but nothing special (which is really unusual at Black Sheep). When our server asked at the end of our meal how our food was, we told her our food was just OK, which we found to be highly unusual from all of our other experiences at this restaurant. My husband told her that his sandwich was soggy, to which she replied, "Yes, someone at the other table just told me that too, and they said they ask for the sauce on the side" and then she said "I guess you just have to live and learn." I told her about my disappointment with my sandwich, and while she did apologize, she also said, "Well, I guess our feature this week just isn't so good." We pointed out that our food has always been really good here and that this was so out of the ordinary, and she did offer us a free dessert, but by then we were just ready to leave so we declined.
As we left the restaurant, the first thing we smelled was cigarette smoke. Immediately to our left was a cluster of 4 or 5 people who appeared to be employees huddled up in front of the door to the kitchen smoking. Perhaps this explains the slow service and lack of attention to providing top notch food tonight. It just seemed like somebody wasn't paying attention to the basics which have always made this restaurant one of our favorites. It was just in such stark contrast to all of our other visits that I don't know that we will return.
