Asked to move tables because of flies. The server said there were flies everywhere with an attitude. We moved anyway and there were no flies there. Then she didn’t ever come back to get our drinks. There was one other table other than us. When we left after 20 minutes of no service we saw her eating at the bar. Food is good but I won’t be back. Worth the Stop. Worth Going Back If This Is Your Thing. Boonedogs is one of those places that always comes up when someone asks, “Where should I eat around Lexington?” After finally making the trip, I completely understand why. First, let’s clear something up. This is not a roadside hot dog stand. It’s an elevated take on the humble hot dog, wrapped in a fun atmosphere with indoor and outdoor seating that’s perfect for slowing down, enjoying a meal, and spending time with friends or family. The atmosphere alone makes it worth the visit. We started with the smoked habanero blackberry wings, and they were outstanding. Smoky, flavorful, and easily one of the highlights of the meal. The appetizer sampler was another great choice, especially the fried pickle spears, which were perfectly cooked. Now for the hot dogs. I’m unusually picky about hot dogs. They’re one of my favorite foods, and I judge them against the classic Southern hot dog I grew up eating. Boonedogs takes a different approach. The dogs themselves are excellent—large, flavorful, and high quality. The French-toasted buns are beautifully done, and you can tell every ingredient has been carefully chosen. For me, though, the proportions didn’t quite work. I ordered the chili, slaw, and mustard dog, and by the time I worked through the bun and the larger dog, the toppings had become secondary. The mustard remained the dominant flavor, while the chili and slaw almost disappeared. Ironically, the chili itself was really good. I ended up scooping a little off the hot dog and tasting it by itself just to see what I was missing. It had a nice balance of sweetness, spice, and just enough heat to make it interesting. Maybe not exactly how I’d make my own chili, but absolutely a good chili. I just wanted it to play a bigger role in the sandwich. For my taste, doubling the chili, cutting the mustard back a bit, and leaving the slaw where it was would have let that excellent chili become the star. The Kentucky Dog was another excellent option, and my wife thoroughly enjoyed the pimento cheese dog. She’s a huge fan of pimento cheese and thought it was outstanding. I’m one of those Southerners who’s never quite understood the obsession, so while I could appreciate the quality, it simply isn’t my favorite flavor profile. That’s the beauty of Boonedogs. It’s willing to take a familiar comfort food and elevate it into something different. If you’re looking for a traditional roadside chili dog, this isn’t that place. If you’re looking for a chef-inspired take on the American hot dog with excellent appetizers and a fun atmosphere, Boonedogs absolutely delivers. Worth the Stop? Absolutely. Worth Going Back? Absolutely—especially if elevated hot dogs are your thing. Meal type: Lunch Price per person: $40–50 Food: 4 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
