Good standard.

More info

"It's not just the wine talking; it's the place and people, too" It's not often you look around you and sense both serenity and whimsy in one restaurant but the team at Broeding does it with aplomb. Many establishments can do food well but to do it with warmth and kindness and curiosity and excitement is a rare feat. From the moment we walked in, we noticed that the decor was equal parts charming (a striped column appears before you and reappears on the menu) and thoughtful (sound-dampening baffling is discretely tucked on walls and near windows). None of this would be worth your time if the menu weren't as well done as the interior. The pairing is a must-have, with wines and non-alcoholic beverage punching well above their weight to complete each bite. The only quibble we had was our quail sitting on the cooktop for maybe an extra 30 seconds giving its otherwise succulent bite the barest hint of a chalky texture. A beet mille-feuille was pleasant enough until a beurre blanc completed its earthy sweetness with a rich, velvety finish. And while my entire dining experience at Steireck in Vienne was of another class altogether, the venison at Broeding showcased subtlety and bravado in equal measure; it takes a lot of technique to make celery as mouthwatering as chanterelles. My favorite of the night was the utterly delightful cheese course. I hadn't read too closely, so don't repeat my mistake and carefully parse this description: "Goat cheese with red cabbage meringue and mustard caviar." What I had interpreted as a simple but rarefied cheese plate was upended when a masterful recreation of a deviled egg appeared. Savory-sharp mustard cut right through a creamy goat's cheese with just the right touch of funk while brightly pickled cabbage and a crisp savory shell completed the picture. That would've been enough but an astounding 30 year-old sherry—dry as a bone—came in like the piercing note of a soprano over a chorus. On paper, the sherry was interesting, if puzzling. But once the lactic sweetness of the cheese-and-pickle combination joined the wine, everything made sense. This is enough to make a visit worthwhile. More than enough. But from the moment we sat down, Gottfried brought a vivacious energy and infectious enthusiasm for the food and drink that turned simple eating into captivating entertainment. The love for this food, his team, and his diners shows through in a way that deserves not only your attention but your affection.
