FINALLY, A TRAFALGAR SQUARE RESTAURANT THAT SERVES GOOD FOOD...This venue has had many incarnations over the years. It's last, The Strand Dining Room, started off atrociously the food, almost inedible. It made a brave attempt at a recovery, bringing in an established chef etc. but sadly all to no avail. But with every dark cloud there's always a silver lining at Bronte is just that.Yes, it's got the usual Tom Dixon design, metal everywhere approach (if you've visited his other establishments e.g. Paramount, Mondrian etc. you'll know what I mean) even down to the Salt & Pepper CellarsBut it makes maximum use of the light from the grand dining room style windows. The express menu (£14.50) allows you to have a two course meal & a glass of wine for under £20. Which was a result considering I missed the soft launch. But sadly on my visit, the service was that of a soft-launch and atrociously lacking. We were constantly having to chase waiting staff, first to their garner attention, and then to follow up to get what was previously asked from another of their team when it hadn't arrived. English language was a barrier for our waitress too. They appear to have the Westminster Council curse and be unable to serve a Burger under a Medium (so forget rare). But the coleslaw side was clearly freshly made (though I am getting a little bored with the fashion of putting things in a Brioche bun), and the fries were good but the Limoncello cheesecake desert was the winner. With the fresh fruit sorbet being the best of the lot.House Rose wine was fresh and extremely appealing to the Palate on a summers day.Sit outside and you get a fabulous view over Trafalgar Square. This is definitely a place to take your tourist guests, do the meal deal and all their preconceptions about London being over-priced will be blown and you explain why the lions at the base of Nelson Columns lie down like dogs (look it up).
