31/1/26 g Saturday early evening small meal - El Minya - C-Boat 2/5 We three middle aged guys from London were staying two nights in El Minya to explore the local caves tombs and churches. On our return we decided to eat on the river at dusk. We chose this restaurant from its two neighbours as it seemed the most restaurant-like. Gglmps menus were four years old so we entered and checked the menu, the prices were still reasonable although there was little for us vegetarians so holiday rules kicked in for one of us. It was quite busy with most people drinking, only a few eating. We took a table by the river and watched the far bank dim as the sun went down behind us. The waiters were not particularly bothered about serving us so I had to get their attention, even then they took their time to come to take the order. No problem as the view was good and it was warm. My flexitarian friend chose the Calzone (158). Our friend ordered the large Margherita (105) and I ordered a Pasta Arabiata (79). A Queen Salad (70) was also ordered as well as two small waters (12 each) as there were no large waters (20), a Strawberry milkshake (69) and a Birell/Brell (52). We were told the pizzas would take half an hour, fine. That was at 17:45. I asked for the Wifi code only to be told it was only for ordering online. Within ten minutes the drinks were delivered, the milkshake was good. The plates, napkins, table mats, cutlery, tomato ketchup sachets, salt and pepper were dropped off and arranged. By then the only view was of the new town on the East Bank with large LED PORTO ELMINYA emblazoned on the cliffs. The internal lights came on and thankfully no music came from the speakers. The 'boat' was very stable, no yawing, rolling or pitching at all. I think it is attached to the substrate/river bed. 1.4 hours after ordering simple food we were still waiting. Some of the reviews warned of this. We were just having a snack/first course here before going to our Istanbul Hotel to eat in their (more veggie friendly) restaurant Ork..d. We were in danger of being too late. The neighbouring table had finished their meals (they were there before us). At 19:17 the pizzas arrived at last. 1.5 hours after ordering. I was hungry so my friends shared theirs with me. The Marguerite had no tomatoes in it and looked more like a four cheeses. The Calzone was quite meaty and more like a Cornish pasty in dough consistency. My pasta arrived a few minutes later, a medium size bowl of penne with some runny sauce distributed throughout. It was quite bland and needed a lot of pepper to spice it up. There were only capsicums and a few very mild chilli peppers. The penne was cooked just right though, slightly al dente. It was not up to the standard of Old... in Cairo (although half the price here). It was not unpleasant though and was the cheapest main on the menu. It also had tomatoes, coriander and tinned mushrooms. We shared the dishes to compare. It was agreed that the calzone although not a real one was not unpleasant. My friend thought it was slow stewed beef and chicken. The large salad had no vinaigrette so was also bland. Translating the menu small print it said taxes included. My friend could not finish his pizza so I did. We were all too full )and late) to eat at our hotel restaurant. We could not even fit in a desert (maybe taking another hour too?) The restaurant was overall (well off) family friendly (lots of small children were there). On entering we were hassled heavily and physically outside the entrance by a small boy trying to sell us a packet of tissues for 4. There is certainly poverty here. On finishing I caught the eye of the a waiter to ask for the 'cheque'. He returned relatively quickly to present a printed bill in Arabic, around the same value that I had calculated. We ggltranslated it to find the original tax free prices itemised with tax added to the total. I paid the 552 by cash (3*200 notes) and we left the 48 change as a tip, as you could not blame the waiters. Meal type: Dinner Price per person: E£1–200 Food: 2 Service: 2 Atmosphere: 4
