To be frank, it was my first time at Tiendesitas, although I usually pass this by whenever I commute to and from Metro Manila. My sister used to go to Tiendesitas a lot in the past, but it was first time too to go there again after a long while. She remarked to me that a lot of changes has happened in Tiendesitas since she last visited it. She was a bit disappointed to learn that it has become some sort of a mall.
Too bad I didn't get to see the old Tiendesitas. As of this writing, this place still seems to be under renovation.
My sister and I went to the Pasig/Mandaluyong area last Sunday night on an impulse, because we wanted to check out the tunnel of dancing Christmas lights on the street near Tiendesitas (and we were not disappointed, yay!).
Since biglaang lakad, nakapambahay lang kami! Hahaha. :))
We were strolling at Tiendesita's tiangge area on the second floor and there we found Cafe Avelino's.
As our trip was unplanned, I was a bit short of cash. Still, that didn't stop us from checking Cafe Avelino's out. It is an "open" establishment, which means it doesn't have a main entrance. It is so open that you'd mistake it as a furniture section if you don't look up at the cafe's signage. Hahaha. Just go there inside and that's it. It is beside Potato Corner.
We decided to have just desserts and coffee (as I have said, I was short of cash. Who knew we would go to Crossing, anyway?):
◆ Cafe Mocha - ₱80
◆ Cappuccino - ₱80
◆ Chocolate Brazo de Mercedes - ₱60
◆ Mango Cheesecake - ₱150
The food was generally good, although I found the Mango Cheesecake too sweet for me. And for the price, the slice was rather small. I thought that the thick graham cracker crust (which I really liked) would offset the sweetness of the caramelized mangoes. But still, the mangoes were way too cloying.
I am not a fan of brazo de mercedes, but I liked Cafe Avelino's take on this, thanks to its incorporation of chocolate. It was also not too sweet, as well. I even found myself liking this a lot more than the mango cheesecake.
I loved the interiors (I took a particular fancy at the colored lights above the counter) and the chill ambiance despite its proximity to the tiangge.
Cafe Avelino's also offers sandwiches, pasta dishes and even more substantial meals like sinigang.
The staff was nice and friendly, too. ????
This is a great place to cool your heels, relax and have decent meals and coffee after a tiring bout of shopping around Tiendesitas. ????
Ambience - Good place to hangout with friends or chill solo. Its not noisy since hindi sya daanan ng tao. Medyo mahina lang aircon and it gets hot at around 2pm when I visited.
Food - they have a lot of food choices from pasta to rice meals. I tried:
Linguini with Anchovy Pesto (160php) - mild lang lasa ng pesto which I dont like. The anchovy was the highlight of the dish, I like how salty it is. Overall ayos naman.
Toffee coffee (130php) - this doesnt taste coffee at all. Sobrang tamis nya for my taste. I felt like powdered shake lang sya which is a bit dissapointing.
They offer free wifi which is really fast. Will I go back? Maybe, I'd like to try out their rice dishes naman.
