Not open and no signs to say so, went there during their bussiness hours and the place looked abandoned!

Have been here a few times, and have to say it is my favorite sit-down place in the area by a decent margin. The food is always delicious, and incorporates and excellent mix of more familiar, predictable comfort offerings (classic poutine with bacon gravy, pumpkin gnocchi) to more creative and outside-the-box options (bacon-wrapped watermelon rind, tuna au pouivre). The menu rotates to include new and exciting options, but remains just unchanged enough that there are usually a couple of reliable staples that you can go back and enjoy again. Another thing hat struck me was that they have a really solid craft beer selection, straying from the tired state-wide breweries (Capital, Point, MKE, etc) to include some less-frequently distributed items from neighboring markets. Combine probably the best craft beer selection in the city with delicious, well-balanced, often creative dishes served small-plates style and you get what I believe to be the area's best restaurant.

I grew up in West Bend and was looking for a new restaurant to try. We chose Cafe Souerette because the menu looked great. But there were issues from the start. We were running a few minutes late, coming up from Milwaukee on a Friday night, so I attempted to call to say my party of three would be a few minutes late . I called three times and the phone rang forever, but nobody picked up. I dialed directly from the # on their website and from my phone when I made the reservation, so I naturally assumed the restaurant must have gone up in flames! Nope, got there a few minutes late and not even busy! Not a good way to run a business if your clientele can't get a hold of you. My husband had the halibut, which was very good. My mom and I had the pan seared perch. Growing up in Wisconsin and not only eating, but catching perch for over 30 years of my life, that was the most disappointing fish dinner we have ever had. When the plates cames out and we both looked at it and said under our breath "what in that!" ,you know something is terribly wrong. $15 for five pieces of soggy fish the size of your middle finger ...really?? Those weren't perch. The waitress forgot the coleslaw, which we had to ask for and got at the end if the meal. Typical creamy coleslaw, but good tasting. Lastly, when I made the reservation, I was asked if we were celebrating anything special. I said yes, my husband's birthday. Usually when these small town restaurants know you're celebrating something, they bring out a scoop of ice cream or piece if cake. Not that I expect anything, but why did they even ask? Very sad. Was hoping we had found a new restaurant to go to when coming back into town to visit family.
