What can I say about this absolutely amazing place! Having read about this 'go to' coffee shop, both in my guide book and blogs I knew my feet would soon enter their premises—sooner rather than later. Boy, was I not disappointed. It actually surpassed my expectations! There simply isn't a comparable place to hang out with the local hipsters and enjoy a fab coffee or matcha latte, as well as eat delicious fusion food. Set in an historic building (about 120y old) which amazingly used to be the local prison, as well as an opium den!, this beautifully restored building oozes history and character in spades. Opened in 2016, it's been firmly established as the best place to chill and hang out—not just in Chinatown but in the whole city itself. I was extremely fortunate when visiting for the first time meeting Jackie; co-owner of this gem of a coffee shop. He couldn't have been more welcoming and friendly. He explained Caffe Diem originally used to be located in a much smaller shop down the same street, but due to it's overwhelming popularity demand meant more space was needed. Thus, Jackie and his partner decided to spend money and sweat restoring what had become an essentially abandoned shell of a building. And what a project it was: completely restoring the ex-prison—including removing most of the termite infested wood—when you visit you might find yourself either sipping your latte in what used to be a prison cell or lounging with your slice of cake in the once pleasurable room where opium addicts whiled away days lost in their own dreams. Located in the heart of Chinatown, on a corner nr the river, I found my coffee (and matcha) haven sat outside in the attractive covered terrace watching the world go by in this lovely sleepy part of Alor Star. Inside, you're in for a real treat: photos and appealing Chinese style art works adorn every wall space; numerous info plaques describing the history of the premises, the local area and the renovation work; even three fab genuinely traditional old fishing boats hanging on the ceiling in the covered courtyard; and not forgetting the stunning (and my favourite) upper storey which contains two gorgeous spaces—one dedicated to Malaysia's first prime minister, Abdul Rahman, and a private rm (which I was able to see) which is like a museum piece (the former opium den) lavishly decorated in a splendid red theme to celebrate Chinese culture, with beautiful art works both on the walls and around the rm, with the pièce de résistance—five exquisitely handcrafted Chinese lanterns hanging gracefully above the table. The prices are no more expensive than your average Chagee or Starbucks. It's not just a pretty building; the quality of the coffee and matcha is excellent (and all Fair Trade); I had their hot curry which was really delicious (and with big portions); and their bakery offerings are renowned in town—in fact they have a dedicated sister bakery just round the corner. Open till 11pm each night, with regular arts events and live music, frequented by the local Chinese community, the trendy from other parts of the city, and coffee lovers from around the world, you'll be a silly Billy indeed if you come all the way to this lovely northern Malaysian city and not plonk your butt on one of Caffe Diem's comfortable chairs. Being totally honest, this special gem has not only become my all time favorite place in Malaysia for a cuppa but one of the best coffee shops I've had the pleasure to visit anywhere!
