Went by to try out this place for the first time, since we usually go to the official Tropicana for dinner. Made plans with our dear friends to celebrate a graduation and birthday. According to Yelp, google and cañas webpage it's open. We got here at 7pm and the restaurant is CLOSED!!! I'm very disappointed and upset.

Best Cuban restaurant I've had so far. Menu is simple with a mix of modern twists and old classics. All the meat is tender and flavorful. Nice chill atmosphere too.

If you're a long-time Downey resident, you know by now the Cuban goodness of Tropicana on Paramount Boulevard. Caña By Tropicana is a larger Cuban fusion restaurant with a small stage and dance floor. They sometimes have live music on Friday and Saturday nights - and usually with a cover charge. It's at the corner of Firestone Boulevard and Old River School Road. There is plenty of free parking in a shared lot. Recently, I stopped here to place an order for takeout (2/7/20). The "Palomilla Club" sandwich ($11.00) makes for a savory, filling lunch. The massive sandwich is comprised of "French bread, grilled skirt steak, bacon, tomato, lettuce, Swiss cheese and jalapeños." The shining star of this meal was the grilled skirt steak. The flavor was delicious. The steak was tender and juicy. No tough pieces. I removed a star from my evaluation (below) because the jalapeños were for some reason omitted from my order - this after me telling the man who took my order I wanted it "just like the menu says." This sandwich also comes with a side of shoestring fries. If you're a kid at heart and not allergic to peanuts, I recommend the peanut butter and jelly smoothie ($4.00). Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the only place in Downey that sells these... WINNING! Overall, I'll be back to try more Cuban fusion fare, but I just hope they don't hold back again on any beloved jalapeños. Food: 4.5 * Price: 3.5 * Environment: 4 * Service: 4
