The place is set up on plywood and you feel it. The staff just takes your olive oil, vinegar and cheese mid meal to give to other tables. Definitely don’t order their mussels or clams. I got 4 tiny bits of meat for 15€. When I told the staff that most of the shells were empty and the meat from them weren’t even in the broth.. they took just 2€ off of my bill. So I still paid 13€ for a couple little bits of clam and mussel. Worst dinner and service in all of Italy. Food: 1 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 1 Price per person: €30–40

Disappointing change from the past. Our first visit to Carlo Menta Trastevere Rome six years ago and it was excellent, so much so we have visited five more times, most recently 2004. This week (Sunday September 20, 2006) we visited for dinner, and it was very different from the past. As we arrived for our outdoor reservation two young employees were laughing and talking (clearly not related to restaurant business) - we stood there within clear view several minutes being ignored before they acknowledged our presence. Then we were told even with an outdoor reservation it would be awhile before a table would be ready. Being extremely tired from travel and hungry we agreed to sit inside. The next disappointment was waiting close to five minutes before a waiter approached - he was abrupt, unfriendly, and in a hurry to get our order. The final disappointment was the food. What was in the past excellent pizza this time was so soggy you couldn't pick it up, and the sausage/mushroom toppings were virtually nonexistent. The Carlo Menta Penne (a supposed house specialty) was a very small portion loaded with a sauce that versus the past was loaded with sugar or sweetener of some kind. Tasted more like dessert than an entree. The peas tasted like they were either frozen or left over from lunch. The whole experience was very, very disappointing. So, if you want rude service and mediocre food served in small portions by all means visit Carlo Menta Trastevere Rome. For us, never again. Photo added to verify our review was from a recent visit.
