UPDATE 06JUL2026: It pains me to make this update, but I believe the quality of Cheeni's food has really fallen off since opening a few years ago. When we first visited, flavors were diverse and surprising, and portion sizes were more than adequate for the price. Lately, we've been unimpressed with the dishes, and even plates we've regularly ordered have been boring and shrunk in size. We used to have ample food to take home and enjoy next day. Recently, we've left paying more than ever and still not feeling satisfied. The drinks from Bar Beej are the star of Cheeni, and that makes me really sad. Chef Preeti and Amy are wonderful. I hope this is just a passing phase in Cheeni's growth. ----- ORIGINAL REVIEW: Really lovely South Indian restaurant in the old Jack Tar location. We popped in for a birthday dinner on a Saturday night and were delighted to be seated quickly. I liked that the kitchen is in the same room as the diners. The cooking scents waft throughout the restaurant and even out into the street. The smell of curry leaves and other southeast Asian spices brought back fond memories of my time in that area of the world. The interior is small but doesn't feel cramped. It does get loud when all the tables are full. There's also outdoor seating for those who want to enjoy the fresh air. The ordering experience is interesting - all menu items are contained in a chest on the table, and a small card with a monkey lets the waitstaff know if you're ready to order or need something. The waitstaff suggests to order all our dishes at once, so the kitchen can send them as they are ready. We eat mostly vegetarian and decided on the muttakos medallions, baby brinjals, the Rani, and the paneer aur muttar pulao. The flavors of all dishes were varied and excellent. The paneer dish comes with a LOT of rice but not much paneer at all. I also enjoyed a bourbon cocktail made with muddled jaggery. Prices are comparable to other restaurants in the downtown area. Two small plates, two entrees, a cocktail, and the tip totaled about $113. Eating Cheeni is a real treat. We're glad to have it in Durham. Food: 3 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 4 Order type: Dine in Meal type: Dinner Price per person: $50–100 Recommendation for vegetarians: Somewhat recommend Vegetarian offerings: Clearly labelled vegetarian dishes Vegetarian options: Vegetarian options are clearly labeled on the menu. There were several options to choose from in both the small plates and entrees. Dietary restrictions: Gluten free dishes are clearly labeled on the menu. We had a nut allergy to avoid, and the waitstaff kindly accomodated this. There seems to be something to fit everyone's needs at Cheeni. There is even a halal chicken dish on offer. Parking space: Somewhat difficult to find parking Parking options: Paid street parking, Paid parking garage Parking: There are several paid garages in the area which are a short walk from Cheeni. Most of the garages will let you out for free if it's on the weekend and after a certain time. There's also limited street parking in the area, but I've never had luck grabbing one of those spots.
