We had a reservation for New Year’s Eve dinner or so we thought. When we arrived, the reservation had vanished somewhere between the old year and the new one. After a few moments of confusion, we were seated at a shared table—an interesting concept if you’re attending a spiritual retreat, a sociological experiment, or volunteering for an NGO, but hardly ideal for ringing in the New Year. From that point on, the culinary obstacle course began: we had to ask for cutlery, then drinks, then bread The only thing missing was an invitation to step into the kitchen and help out. The salad, a simple dish with no culinary ambitions whatsoever, took 40 minutes to arrive. We assume the lettuce was still making its way across the Sahel on foot. After more than an hour of waiting for the second course—which never materialized—we decided to leave angry, hungry, and already in the new year, which was not exactly part of the plan. It’s a shame, because African cuisine deserves respect, care, and professionalism. Here, however, the only thing that felt truly African was the “human warmth” in the sense that we were forced to share a table, because when it came to service, there was nothing but absence.
