I stop by Circle K in Hampstead fairly often because it's convenient, but the customer service has never really stood out to me. The employees aren't rude, but they generally seem more interested in getting through their shift than interacting with customers. Any friendliness feels more like something they're required to do than something that comes naturally. That said, the store is usually stocked, I can get what I need quickly, and it's a convenient stop when I'm on the go. It's not a bad place, just nothing particularly memorable.

I stopped in to buy a single beer and had one of the most unnecessarily uncomfortable checkout experiences I’ve had in a long time. The cashier (a white tall oversized woman) greeted everyone ahead of me in a friendly manner, but when it was my turn, the first thing she said was, “Do you have your ID?” I handed her my valid North Carolina REAL ID, and instead of simply verifying it, she immediately asked me to state my birthday. When I pointed out that the birthday was clearly printed on the ID she was holding, she responded, “Yeah, but I’m asking you right now.” I understand checking IDs. That’s part of the job. What I don’t understand is treating a customer like they’re being interrogated when they’re presenting a valid government-issued ID. The entire interaction felt unnecessarily hostile and dismissive. There was no attempt to compare the photo to my face, no explanation, just a demand to answer questions as if I were taking a test. What made it worse was the obvious difference in how other customers were being treated compared to me. Everyone else received a friendly greeting and normal checkout experience. I received suspicion and attitude from the moment I stepped up to the counter. If your policy is to verify IDs, that’s completely fine. But there is a professional and respectful way to do it. Customers shouldn’t be made to feel singled out or treated like they’re guilty of something for trying to make a legal purchase. I left with my purchase, but also with the feeling that I was being profiled rather than served. (31 years old blue collar Hispanic men).
