RE: Racist, anti-Chinese establishment.
I phoned up a couple of days arriving in London and spoke to a young male staff who was very helpful and said I could have the same afternoon tea menu and items during the "elevensies" at 11am since the afternoon slots till 5.30pm were full.
When I arrived at 11am, I was greeted by a ginger hair male manager who served us in February. He was obviously not English but some disgruntled Eastern European who asked me for my full name not once but twice. Obviously, he was not happy to let me in and wanted to refuse my entry despite the fact that the room was almost empty as people were clearing out. He gave us the first table at the door which was the worst one so everyone could brush past us. However, the room was empty now so the evil restaurant manager did not get his wish come true.
When we set down, they had a physically impaired lady wait staff with a bad speech impairment which made it really hard to understand what she was saying most of the time, hand us a small menu with 4 only items, each less than 5 pounds.
When we asked about the afternoon menu which we were promised on the phone, she then had to check with her manager which obviously meant we were not going to have it since the ginger guy already had an issue with us at the door.
In the end we ordered all 3 of the 4 items on the tiny menu as one was sold out. 2 of the cakes completely similar to each other, both had nothing much but cheap meringue in it.
If this is a five-star hotel, I wonder what idiots would pay for such service.
the kippers were perfect for me
we had afternoon tea here on a Wednesday. it was absolutely exquisite! The staff were all attentive even though clearly busy and working hard. The afternoon tea itself was the best I have ever had. We tried some cocktails in the bar afterwards and they were delicious. The bar staff worked hard and were very gracious and yet friendly and professional at a busy time. I would return in a heartbeat.
