Rome has been an interesting food experience for us. We’ve eaten at places with incredible reviews that were terrible, and places with mediocre reviews that were amazing. Basically, the entire rating system appears to be inverted. So when we saw Hosteria Da Cesare had a Michelin star, naturally we were skeptical. Turns out Michelin actually got one right. We started with the mixed seafood platter, which was absolutely nothing like what we expected. It arrived as thin, julienned pieces of raw seafood with cucumber, celery and carrot. I stared at it for a few seconds wondering what exactly I had ordered. Then I tasted it. Chef’s kiss. Strange. Unexpected. Absolutely amazing. For our first plates, we had the lasagna and gnocchi with carne ragù. The lasagna was the best lasagna I’ve ever had. Ever. I’m not saying that lightly. I’ve eaten a lot of lasagna. I have years of research invested in this conclusion. The gnocchi and ragù were fantastic too, but that lasagna deserves its own zip code. For our second course, we had the sliced beef with mushrooms. I normally avoid ordering beef outside the U.S. because my experience is that it arrives either still actively participating in life or cooked until it could be used as a building material. Not here. Perfectly cooked, incredibly tender, flavorful, and exactly what the doctor ordered. Assuming your doctor prescribes large quantities of Italian beef and mushrooms, in which case please send me his number. Our server was incredible as well—attentive, friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely helpful throughout the meal. The only downside was being solicited for a tip. We had already planned to leave one anyway, but I have to admit I’m not a fan of being asked for a tip in Europe, where that generally isn’t the norm. Still, that was a very minor issue in an otherwise outstanding experience. One of the best meals we’ve had in Italy and easily our best meal in Rome. Five stars. No hesitation. And apparently I owe Michelin an apology. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

Sapere che il nostro antipasto di mare abbia saputo sorprendervi positivamente fin dal primo assaggio e che le nostre lasagne abbiano conquistato il vertice assoluto della sua personale classifica — dopo anni di onorato "studio" — è per la nostra brigata un motivo di autentico orgoglio. Ci fa altrettanto piacere sapere che la tagliata di manzo con i funghi sia risultata tenera e cotta a puntino e che la premura del nostro cameriere abbia accompagnato al meglio ogni portata. Desideriamo inoltre ringraziarla per l'osservazione riguardante la mancia: accogliamo il suo appunto con serietà per ricordare a tutto il personale che la mancia deve sempre rimanere un gesto spontaneo e mai sollecitato.
