Dastaan Pakistan in Mosman offers a refreshing take on Pakistani cuisine, combining authentic flavours with a refined fine dining experience. From the moment we walked in, the elegant ambience and warm hospitality made us feel welcome. The restaurant beautifully showcases the richness of Pakistani culinary traditions while presenting them in a modern and sophisticated setting. We started with the Boneless Fish Pakora, which was perfectly crispy and packed with flavour. The Chapli Kebab was juicy, aromatic, and one of the highlights among the starters. The Tandoori Prawns were cooked beautifully, with a smoky flavour and just the right amount of spice. For mains, the Nihari stood out with its rich, slow-cooked flavours and tender lamb shank that simply melted off the bone. The Haleem was smooth, hearty, and comforting, delivering the traditional taste that many Pakistanis grow up loving. The Malai Boti Handi was creamy and indulgent, with tender chicken cooked in a delicate white gravy that was full of flavour without being overly heavy. The Chicken Biryani was another standout dish, featuring fragrant saffron rice, tender chicken, and perfectly balanced spices. The Plain Naan and Peshawari Naan complemented the curries wonderfully, especially the Peshawari Naan with its subtle sweetness. To finish, we enjoyed the Ras Malai and Gulab Jamun with vanilla ice cream. Both desserts were beautifully prepared and provided the perfect sweet ending to the meal. The traditional chai was also excellent and completed the experience perfectly. Overall, Dastaan is a fantastic addition to Sydney’s Pakistani food scene. The quality of the food, attention to detail, presentation, service, and ambience make it a destination worth visiting. Whether you’re familiar with Pakistani cuisine or trying it for the first time, Dastaan offers a memorable dining experience that celebrates the true flavours of Pakistan. Highly recommended, and I’ll definitely be back to explore more of the menu. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

The food is absolutely delectable. Let’s just start there. It’s not commercialised, doesn’t have artificial flavouring, and everything is basically cooked fresh. The naans are also very fluffy and made in the tandoor (which of course, make it even better.) It’s not often a restaurant in Sydney that serves South Asian (or Punjabi-Mughalai) cuisine uses an actual tandoor for the naans and meats, such as real tandoori chicken or tandoori prawns. The atmosphere is also a microcosm of Indo-Persian architectural influences and decoration, typical across traditional spaces in Pakistan. Speaking to the owner, I was pleased to find that the artwork was all imported from Pakistan, including a real peacock feather at the cashier, topped off with gorgeously designed and intricate carpets draped on the wall in the Persianate shikaar-gah style (literally meaning, “hunting grounds”, popular almost the aristocracy and even clothing styles showing motifs of flora and fauna.) The cushions at the windows were hand-embroidered in Pakistan and have that particular regal, South Asian feel in the artwork made by the stitching. The whole establishment It really does give you a snapshot of typical Mughal artistic imagery, think elephants, peacocks, spices, Indo-Persian poetry on the walls, etc. Service was also great, speaking with the owner was a delight and he was very keen on listening to our experience. The whole premise of the restaurant was to share and preserve the recipes of Chef Sadaf, who herself grew up in Pakistan, and her own mother’s recipes, who grew up in the city of Lahore (a very ancient city!) The name of the place, “Dāstān” means “story”, “tale” or even “legend,” and through the food and atmosphere we definitely experienced the story of traditional Pakistani surroundings and the family’s culinary history. Arrived with no expectations but was pleasantly surprised. Great food, lovely service and very relaxed. The restaurant was busy but didn't impact on the experience. Would recommend
