Lovely drinks, unfortunately let down by the bathroom (toilet seat wasn't fitted, no hand wash). I'd still go back as the drinks were amazing. Price per person: £20–30 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 4

Detour on Seel Street is the real deal. Gone are the days when dry ice and sparklers distract from a basic drink in a fancy glass — Detour doesn’t do gimmicks. What they offer is a well-thought-out modus operandi: highlighting cocktails from around the world, backed up by an extensive back bar of rums, whiskeys and spirits you can tell are there to be used, not just displayed. I’ve been a few times now — once or twice on a date, and also with friends — and the staff are consistently brilliant. They’re attentive and genuinely help you feel knowledgeable without ever being snobby. Luke behind the bar was a standout: he chatted with my mate at length about different rums (my mate definitely pretended he knew what he was talking about), and Luke handled it perfectly — clearly knew his stuff, but zero pretentious attitude. Drink-wise, the Old Fashioneds on the menu absolutely stand up to scrutiny if you’re the type to go looking for flaws. But my personal favourite is the White Russian — genuinely one of the best I’ve had anywhere. Music is spot on too: a light background you naturally bop along to, but it never overpowers conversation. And the inner rooms are ideal if you want something a bit more private or intimate on a date. Service is prompt, everyone’s polite and cordial, and the whole team has their own sense of humour — even if the place is quiet, sitting at the bar chatting to staff can be the best seat in the house.
