Owner and head chef Linda Daniela came to my restaurant Stockpot in Rīga as an 18 year old with no experience in the field. I trained her to cook my way, with fresh ingredients of a good quality being the key. She learned very fast and worked very hard. She was part of the Stockpot team for almost 10 years leaving after several years in the position of head chef. When I heard that she had opened her own restaurant in the arse end of nowhere 'Balvi' I knew that I had to take the 3 hour drive from Rīga to check it out. I knew the food would be good but it far exceeded that. Together with my wife we tried the nacho plate (8 euro) Asian style pulled pork "tacos" the twist being that they were served on a prawn cracker as opposed to a wheat or corn tortilla,making them very light. We also tried the Asian style "Taco" with Tiger shrimp and very tasty French fries. The bartender made very good Aperol spritz. Litterally a hidden gem since restos in the area are scarce amd on the way south of the country you need to make a short detour and it is worth it! A newly open place offers snacks and mains and alao desserts. A short but versatile enough menu will make you smile after being served. Cold beetroot soup is divine. Colours and flavours match perfectly. It really is a nice surprise for your eyes and taste. Cesar salad with chicken breasts and crutons is well seasoned amd refreshing. Pasta with shrimps and salmon is well cooked, sprinkled with nuts make a good mix of flavours. Also rice crisps with vegetables amd shrimps were well seasoned and tasty. There's always room for a desert and both that are on offer nail it. Altogether a great experience also the young owner is always ready for a small talk.
